Wait... they're reversing the races? What for?

So, now we three actors of Indian (Mandvi), New Zealand (Curtis), and Iranian (Toub) heritage.

Ya know, I don't think this is what people were expecting when they said that the movie shouldn't be featuring primarily whites.

Still, the races matter less than the acting talent involved. I'm just going to have to hope that this all works out.

I also REALLY want to know why Bryan and Mike have to say about the casting choices.

I suppose the forces that be just wouldn't allow for the sheer pantshittingawesomeness of a Hugo Weaving Ozai and a Jason Isaacs.

My expectations for this movie are around zero, which is something I never really say around the Avatar fandom itself, just because it's the same for them only they get worked the fuck up over it.

As I suspected: white people get to be good guys, colored folk play the villains.

Is that better (not as bad) than just 100% white-washing the whole cast? I don't even know.

THAT RACIST! What does he have against Indians? I'm outraged.

Also, no source, but I remember hearing that the Earth Kingdom would be chinese. Could be wrong on that though.

Neither movie-making or racism work that way.

It's almost like racism is an institutional problem, especially in something like the movie industry where you have to deal with the biases of a whole long line of people including producers and financiers and studio heads and all kinds of people like that.

But.. But.. That would mean we couldn't solve racism by identifying and socially shunning consciously racist individuals, but instead must subject to scrutiny not only every social institution in our culture, but also our own unconscious biases!

Well yes, but this seems to me to be much more a case of "Let's cast Dev Patel as Zuko because everyone loved Slumdog. Now his family has to be the same race" then it is any type of racism They originally had Jesse McCartney as Zuko, I don't think they dropped him because he was too white to be the villain.
