How do you create a game Hoax?
I kinda miss those... and im not talking (exactly) about viral marketing. But you know... Hoax! Back from the day before the internetz where wild rumors from the land of the rising sun would arrive on the other side of the globe sounding nothing like the original information...
Stuff like, you know... http://techgage.com/images/news/supe...ake_122007.jpg http://www.pokezam.com/games/fake/chaosblack/01.pnghttp://www.pokezam.com/games/fake/chaosblack/boxart.jpg http://www.bitfood.com/wp-content/up...kemforever.jpg http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/963/ff825nm.jpg You know? So, for the curiosity and the lolz, it got me thinking... what does it take to make an actuall Hoax? What would it take to actually fool people to come to expectation of a game that dosent exist? Today you can't do it like years ago, where any shoddy scan would land you on the news... people debunk hoaxes at INTERNETZ speed! So, just for the fun, what would fool you guys? And what you think it takes to create a hoax in the gaming world? |
I think the problem is that, as you said, hoaxes are debunked at the speed of the internet. Gamers have been burned by so many hoaxes now that they're wary of even the least spurious data.
Man, I really like the word "spurious" today. |
Take a photoshopped picture and make it look like it's on a page of Famitsu. Say it's from the next issue, and decrease the image quality so they can't tell too much about it. Make up whatever believable claims you want about the alleged game. Then watch and laugh.

Well...
http://techgage.com/images/news/supe...ake_122007.jpg This one is a simple matter of stealing a logo, adding two letters (and it seems off to me in the first place that they'd be so much bigger, honestly), and blurring it to cut down on detail issues. http://www.pokezam.com/games/fake/chaosblack/01.png First off, this is really shitty pixel art for a mainstream series and people should know better. http://www.pokezam.com/games/fake/chaosblack/boxart.jpg This is better and may fool some people, but it's tiny and washed-out. http://www.bitfood.com/wp-content/up...kemforever.jpg This is half-decent work, but again, it's washed out like it's really old for some reason and faded, which makes no sense. http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/963/ff825nm.jpg THIS IS JUST AWESOME WHY ARE THEY NOT MAKING THIS!?!?!?!?! Sadly, for me, it's less of a matter of fooling me into thinking something is real and more of a matter of fooling millions of people into thinking it's real before I even hear about it, by which time it's probably already been debunked. I live in a hole and honestly get all of my gaming news from either here or Yahtzee (at which point the game's been out in America for months). :sweatdrop |

Fuck you, you crushed my dreams before I even HAD them. |
I could see that being made, but only as a fan-made H-Game.
|
I think its primarilly the law of averages. I am sure for every successful hoax there were dozens that died so fast few even knew they existed. I do still think its possible, things like Duke Nukem Forever give that tiny hint of hope that something might be true. Just enough to make us gullible
It all goes with my theory that if enough people tell you something is true, you start believing it yourself. Doesn't matter what pictures, news reports, whatever you have. If enough of the internet community believes it the rumors will spread, the original source will become lost, and legit sources will begin siting it as a potential truth |

No, I'm saying it wasn't H... At least not H enough... I kid! I kid!

A hoax might work if you built Hype behind it. Like, say for instance, you go to a bunch of Fanboy forums and spread teh rumor there (or in a forum in another language) let it brew there, build hype, then, you bright it up like something you yourself have just found...
i know i would probably fall for that one, at least at first... .... anyone up for hoaxing "Capcom Vs Jump Superstars" ? =3 |
