Hagane no Renkinjutsushi: Fullmetal Alchemist hype thread

Japanese Title: 鋼の錬金術師: Fullmetal Alchemist
Localised Title: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Episode count: 51 (tentative)
Official site: http://www.hagaren.jp

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a reboot of the first show. Its purpose is to follow the manga’s storyline more closely as it comes to its end, which is expected to be during the year. While an adaptation, it should be noted that there will still be original material exclusive to the anime to keep events fresh for at least the first part of the series. For example, Isaac, the Ice Alchemist, is a new character created by the author, Hiromu Arakawa, as a request by the new show’s director.

When does it start?
  • Japan: April 5th 2009, 17:00 on TBS and MBS stations (GMT+9) (Japanese language, no subs)
  • South East Asia: April 10th 2009, 20:30 on Animax Asia (GMT+8) (Japanese language, English and Chinese subs)
  • Australia: April 5th 2009, 18:00 at Supernova: Brisbane; subsequent episodes will be streamed on Madman's site a few days after each Japanese telecast (GMT+10) (Japanese language, English subs)
  • North America: April 9th 2009, 10:00 on FUNimation's video streaming site and other key video-sharing partners (think Youtube) (GMT-6) [Japanese language, English subs]
  • France: Soon after JP airing, on Youtube [Full details currently unavailable]
  • Everywhere else: No idea; fansub it.

I liked FMA, but never got into quite as much as other people seemed to. I'll probably enjoy this just the same, though.

This is the best thing to wake up to

Ahahahahahahahhh...

Oh man this is going to be awesome. Best. Birthday present. Ever.

For some reason I particularly like what happens at 1:05 where Al protects Ed. It was so sweet. :o

And the part at 0:33 made me laugh.

And I am diggin' the new, slightly different artstyle.

Hmm, it was very quick, but there was a shot of Father in the trailer. 1:53 if you're wondering.

Oh, there was a shot of him in the pictures from the anime fair anyway...

Looks like the Truth is in too.

I wonder who this ice alchemist guy is.

Definitley, I'm only up to chapter 15 is he someone from later in the book? Gonna watch this like a fiend.

I stopped around Chapter 80 because I lost interest...

With the new anime I might pick this one up again.

I'm thinking that's Isaac. He's a new character that the manga author, Hiromu Arakawa, created just for the anime. I suppose it's suppose to perk it up since almost everyone knows how the manga and first anime begin.

Also this series is apparently called "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood'

I don't know how I feel about this. If I watch it, it'll be in illegal subs. I don't think this can replicate the feeling of watching the first Fullmetal Alchemist with the rest of the NPF, commenting on it on AIM and discussing it on the forums and all that. I'm sure it will be good, since I've read them there comical books, but I doubt it will have the same impact on me as the first go through, since I'll be more alone in my watching.

I's really like a cartoon to come along that I can discuss with you guys like we discussed FMA back in the day, I guess.

I've got pretty much the same feeling here, watching it with my nerdy friends was always a highlight of 2005. Ah well, certainly something to look forward to none the less.

I'm glad they're trying to make the beginning fresher and more interesting, but I hope it doesn't end up coming across too much as just padding. The animation quality looks awesome though, hope it doesn't drop after the first couple episodes.

That's awesome. Ice alchemy is factually cooler than fire alchemy. In before CJ kills me.

I couldn't decide if the localised title sounded less idiotic than the Japanese one, so I tossed a coin.

If it helps for anything, we'll discuss this pseudo-real time as the subs come out. Like with every other anime thread, really.
