Could Fight Club Work?

I wanna talk about Fight Club. (Yus, I know.)

So I was looking through my flicks, and trying to find a fun one to watch on a Sunday night. I found Fight Club. As I sat there and watched it, I wondered if an actual Fight Club could work the way it was depicted in the movie. Then I remembered that the movie was written/filmed in the nineties. Could Fight Club have worked then but not now?

I listened to a bit of the commentary, and during the first fight scene - the iconic part of the movie where Tyler says "I want you to hit me as hard as you can." They discussed that the purpose of the fighting was not to pound out all your stresses and aggravations, but to take the hit, both physically and otherwise.

So my question is this: Could an actual, real life Fight Club work now, and if not could it have worked or could it work and why?

Probably.

As I understand Fight Club had such a huge cult following it got many people starting actual Fight Clubs, although not to the extent or degree in the movie (Cause realistically people aren't nearly as gusto about beating the fuck out of each other). While it certainly was a defining movie for the 90s I think that you could put it anywhere in the generational spectrum and get a similar if not same result.

Do you mean the actually fighting part of Fight Club (because there's lots of that going on actually in little pockets around the globe that you can see on YouTube) or that social engineering aspect where they organize and take down the system? I always wondered how hard it would be to engineer the second part.

That's Project Mayhem. I'm talking about Fight Club, where a bunch of guys get together and fight.

isn't it technically illegal though?

And since when has that stopped anything?

Hey so guys, I just saw some movie where a bunch of guys sat around and smoked weed occasionally. What confused me was that rather than it destroying their life, they just did it to relieve stress, and it seemed to work out well.

So I have to ask, could social gatherings like that work in real life?

Ah well fight clubs can and do exist. There was even a documentary or two on the subject not too long ago. I was more interested in the idea of how Project Mayhem was organized and how well it worked itself out. I wonder just how quickly something like that would get canned these days though.

I think that's pretty much how terrorism works.
