Live action anime the next big thing?
With the recent release of DBZ I've been thinking more on this topic and just this morning a few friends and I had a debate on what other animes would make good movies. I know this topic has been discussed into the ground, but the conversation didn't end there. We went on to agree that a lot of hentai titles out there could have an honest to god potential to be real psychological thrillers that would leave audiences horrified and in some cases sick to their stomachs. There are some real mentally jarring images that could put movies like Saw to the test.
I am not using this thread to advertise or condone hentai, not at all. I'm just suggesting that there is a gold mine waiting out there in the form of graphic realisations of popular animes, not just h-anime. Specifically the more gory ones out there. The images don't disturb as much as they should because they are just ink on a page, but get someone like Tarantino on the job with an allstar cast... Sorry if I stepped over any lines here, but it was an entertaining breakfast chat. |
I'm sure we'll see a Ghost in the Shell live action attempt someday. With techno movies from Bladerunner to Matrix and I Robot to Ultra Violet we have more than enough precedence for having the tools to make Ghost in the Shell go live. The trick is getting a writer to make it not suck and to somehow capture the drama and wonderment of the series and movies.

We already know a Cowboy Bebop movie is in the works, so after the whole "adapting fantasy books for cinema" schtick wears off, I can see this being the new trend.
As for hentai movies, eh, that'd be alright, but it would lose a lot of the appeal without budgets big enough to make the SFX believable (tentacles, for instance). |

Wasn't there like a high budget Pirate porn not too long ago? It did well enough to show that high budget porn can do okay right? |
once my friend ran across a live action version of La Blue Girl. He said it was like some dark twisted muppet sex show, I cant confirm. I refuse to even look at screen shots of it.

At first i was surprised that you guys didn't know the true extent of Live Action Hentai that is floating out there... then, i was sad because i realized i knew too much of it.......
Although, being honest, my knowledge doesn't go beyond a couple of screenshots and cover arts of what is floating out there (and a very, very, very bizarre imagining of Rumble Roses...... take that as you will). But nothing of what you guys said here is yet to be done (tentacles and all...). All i can say is that now i know the price i payed to search for stuff online... X-Rated stuff out of the way... the thing with Live action anime is not really about what is being made, but who is actually making it. On that, we can compare movies like Casshren and Dragonball Evolution. Each one got right what the other got wrong (casshern got the mood and battling of the source material right, Dragonball didn't. Dragonball took a lighter approach on it's mythos, Casshren is overflowing with it) Take for instance... YuYu Hakusho. That could be a Kick ass movie. But i doubt it would be any good if made out of Japan (Without an American Budget...). There is talk of a Saint Seiya live action movie... that one would suck anywhere. |

you know, I think the problem is they pick anime that doesn't translate well to live action. Lets be honest, you cant do DBZ live action, you just cant. Bebop could be done, but freakin hard. If someone sees bebop and thinks "oh its like a western, but in space" then it will suck no matter how good the effects and acting are because they missed what made that show what it is.
This is of course only for serious adaptation. If its just based off the anime, then what I said doesn't apply. |
