I've always been confused about how humanity came to be the dominant species what with nearly every single animal out there being capable of killing a human before they could blink, often without even touching them.

I mean, they had to be more populous before humans built all the cities and stuff, right? And the existing population would probably be enough anyway...

Also, why is some of the technology so much more advanced? They have like, regular tech for the most part except for healing, a few other things, and pokeballs, which are size-changing, matter shrinking, self adjusting self contained environments.

Also, how the hell do you ignore 200+ species out there, most of which are kinda goddamn hard to miss, being giant or colorful or emitting flames and electricity regularly?

All the new pokemon are probably ninjas or sneaky or hobbits or something.

Plus Oak is like 100 years old now and I'm pretty damn sure he isn't wearing glasses, I don't think the guy can really see.

Azisien 04-11-2009 12:04 PM

Well it's not like they didn't know the new species existed, they just weren't in that region!

Honestly though that's like criticizing any sequel ever for adding content.

Okay you know what why the hell am I even considering defending Pokemon's realism, it's fucking Pokemon.

I have wondered about the tech thing before. My guess is 99.5% of their budget goes into R&D budget for developing Pokemon-based technology. I mean as such dangers to human life, this almost makes sense. Tanks would work better, though.

The dumb thing from a realism and gameplay point of view is the Pokedex. Man that thing is useless. You have to own it to know anything about it, what kind of scanner is that? And once you unlock the phenomenal cosmic knowledge after capture...it's still useless. A poorly translated sentence or two and a cheap midi noise, huzzah!

As for a Pokemon MMO, yeah I guess that'd be ok but MMOs in general suck if you ask me. It would be cool to have some semi-realtime combat and build your own gym and crap, but with that comes all the horrors of MMOs, like near-infinite jackassery, everybody and their uncle having a stupid gym thus making the value of a gym pointless, and how would balance be achieved? Everybody would just grab dragon pokemon and it'd be boring.

Three Charizards oughta do JUUUUUST fine...

Oh and a pichu to whip em into shape.

Well, gyms would work like guilds in other games. Who leads is decided internally, and, like in the pokemon universe, if you're not good enough to keep a gym some other gym can come by, kick your ass and take your town. Remember what happened to the Fighting Dojo in Saffron? Sabrina curbstomped them.
As for balance, I'm pretty sure that an all-dragon team would die to a well balanced one. Pokemon types are suppsed to be balanced. Sure, an all legendary squad would be a bitch, but I see legendaries being like serious boss monsters. As in, deep in the asshole of some rapetastic dungeon you need a whole team of trainers to get down to in one piece, then, if you fail to catch the fucker it doesn't respawn for a week.

Ryong 04-11-2009 12:41 PM

Of note is that the legendary pokés are okay with not being all known since the start because, well, one guy in one region decided to start making an encyclopedia on them and started with those close to him. I suppose most legends didn't spread very far...But that's just dumb with some of the legendaries like goddamn Palkia, Dialga and Arceus. Space, time and god mons not very known? Kyogre and Groudon too, being embodiments of the sea and the land, respectively. Embodiments that exist, not just puny legends. I'd say I'm a bit surprised about no religions concerning Arceus but eh. Mew may also be a god but hey, he's more...Childish.

What, get together like 30 people for a single one to benefit from it? That doesn't seem so great.

Jagos 04-11-2009 01:00 PM

Who would catch it?

I can see fights starting over just that.

It may be a better MMO if you could be the Pokemon. I'm sure everyone would go psychic/fire type.

Melfice 04-11-2009 01:21 PM

I'd say legendaries should NOT be catchable in the MMO we're talking about.
They should exist. They should be able to be fought, for items or something, but not caught.

Masaki-kun 04-11-2009 01:21 PM

Yeah, that is a problem... I suppose it would have to be solved the only way that makes sense. With a pokemon battle!
Edit- Yeah, epic battles with legendaries for exp and sweet loots makes way more sense.

Sounds like pretty much every MMO raid ever.

Psychic and Ghost type are generally better. Or at least they were in Red/Blue. Might have changed. I haven't played since middle school.
