I didn't link Bells for the image, but rather for the wiki quote at the end, which referenced the article I then posted.

This is the same damn company that brought us three different iterations of the DS. The same company that brought us three different versions of the Game Boy Advance. The same company that had the RAM chip for the N64, and the same company that sells the Wiimote and Nunchuk separately despite the fact that no gamer would ever possibly not need it. |

Companies decide on price point they want to aim at and make technology to match. Overtime prices on technology drop such that they can release additions to products. I really don't see the problem with deciding a technology is too costly at launch. |

Well, alright, last gen they didn't add new tech, they just arbitrarily decided to make their games reliant on old tech--which really just sets the precedent of them just doing this shit for the money, and fuck the consumers. |
I recall hearing the gyros for M+ were too expensive/big/heavy/energy-hungry until more recently. Can't back it up, though. Anyway... The Wiki quote doesn't paint exactly the same picture as the actual quote from the interview. It doesn't say M+ was thought up "soon after" they were done with the Wiimote, it just puts it in that chronological order and says they've had the idea for a while. Basically, there's no real reason to assume they had this all planned out before they hit the market and just decided to hold it back. Also:

a console is not a PC guys. You're not expected to purchase more hardware to be able to play your games. Consoles are supposed to be "out of the box complete". Addons for some games (Musical instruments, Webcams, Dance floors, Wheels, balance board that stuff...) is not the same as Microsoft going "Hey, starting soon will release a new Ram Extension addon that will make some new games play better or at all"
Like i said, if this is an optional accessory, then it's fine... it's just something you can buy if you want to enhance your gaming a bit. Not unlikely the Wii Zapper. But if games come to demand this piece of hardware, then, seriously... The cheapest console withe the most expensive controller? C'mon... dick move. |
I just think it's a little silly that they came out with the Wii, and everybody was upset because it didn't have the motion control that they expected(Although I can't really recall Nintendo ever claiming 1:1 motion control at release) because it wasn't feasible at the time, so Nintendo tries to fix it and everybody complains about expensive add-ons.

I don't see what the " 3 consoles in a row" argument has to do with anything. In fact I think more competitors should do it. I'm not seeing it as a bad thing. |
If you want to constantly upgrade your console to keep up with new games being put out, then don't buy a console. Buy a PC. Then buy a USB controller. Then hook it up to your TV.
Consoles are a separate entity, which are meant to be an all inclusive, you buy it and you're good until the next generation comes out, product. Upgrades are not supposed to be part of the deal. You buy a console and you expect it to work fine for your games for the next few years, at which point you buy a new one. You don't buy a console expecting to have to pay for upgrades in order to run the games you want to play. That, again, is what PC gaming is about. The two platforms are different, and the most costly/irritating part of PC gaming (having to upgrade constantly to keep up) should not become a part of console gaming. Unless you really hate consoles and want them to go away, or something. |
