SE sez: "Ho, fuck, we take too long making shit!"

Ok, just the SE Prez, but still:

Q: Well, if you look at gaming communities, and how they've responded to Eidos products in the past, it's not necessarily been a very positive reaction. If you're thinking from the gamer's perspective, that's different to the perception of the Square Enix brand, which is very strong on game quality, and very polished, finished products. In the past it's fair to say that Eidos - among others - has been guilty of releasing product before it's finished in order to hit financial date targets. With that in mind, do you feel that there will be some reassurance for gamers now with this acquisition, that they can have more trust and belief in Eidos games as time goes forward?

Yoichi Wada: Yes - that's what I hope to achieve for the entire group. But we at Square Enix also have a problem - it takes too long for us to produce a game...

In reality I think the issues we have are basically the same. On one side you might say that because of the budgetary constraints they released the games without having the games polished to perfection, but on the other side we take too long to release the game.

So we have the same issue in the management and control of the process isn't strict enough. Even though we're producing entertainment products we need to have the right production process in place - and that is something that I'd like to implement across the entire business in our group.

I personally believe that having a good cost performance and having a good quality game can co-exist - I think that this relationship is actually a positive one. But when you look to the creators they tend to think that if they're asked to pursue a better cost performance, they have to sacrifice quality.

It's not true, but we have to change the mindset of the creators - you probably also do a better job when you're busy...?

So, the question is: Do they goof off too much, or does the company want to overwork them more?

I would say "if it ain't broke don't fix it" but honestly I haven't been impressed with anything they have produced after FFX. Star Ocean 3 and FFXII were okay. Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery were average. Honestly Mistwalker seems to be the new Squaresoft.

The logic behind the move isn't very good. Let's combine two companies with flaws and hope they cancel each other out. In reality you are more likely to get a company that takes too long and produces poor quality games.

personally FF has lost most of its appeal to me. I mean it is so story driven, but the story is always the same. We all know most of that time is spent with cut scenes that show characters using skills they lose the instant you control them.

But his statement is fair. Yes some companies rush games out, but others take forever to release anything. Definitely a middle ground most studios never get right

I really don't think they take too long to produce games, there's been a plethora of Squarenix games in the past several years. Maybe not in the main Final Fantasy series all the time, but it always seems like there's a new Squarenix game to be released not too far away, especially if you include remakes and spin-offs. Personally I expect at least a two- to three-year turnaround time in between each main Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest title and I think they're better for it.

I'm actually glad that they're both confident in the merger. Not being Japanese or British, or really in on the workings of the game-creation world even if I were, it's reassuring to see that they both feel comfortable with the merge.

It also means that there's a country I speak the language of that will now be working with the company that makes Final Fantasy. UNREALISTIC DREAMS, AHOY!

Taking to long to produce any game due to brining it to perfection has been, and ALWAYS WILL BE Blizzard's forte.

That is all I have to say to SE about that.

And Valve, somewhat.

It's hard to think of a game developer that has been touted for cranking games out at a lightning fast pace, to think of it.

Obsidian did KotOR 2 in 13 months, which despite the gaping holes (fucking Christmas rush), was still completely awesome.

But other than that, I got nuthin'. Though from everything I've read, most developers would be overjoyed to get as much time as SE gets to work on their games, since most are on a deadline.

On the actual article, I seriously think the development teams need to stop being so anal. There's a difference between trying to get your game right and trying to be perfect.
