Videogames as Art (Part 1)
Hey, everyone, long time no chat. My new article is up here:
http://www.allrpg.com/editorials/gamesasart1.php3 Let me know what you all think! You know I still love you guys. ;) |
Hmm...a very well written article. Raises a lot of issues. I'd just like to say that I believe all videogames are art in some form or another. Especially now, what with dynamic Hollywood plots and such.
|
Thanks for the reply. Oh, and I completely forgot to mention! This articles the first part ina three-part series. The next should be up this Monday, and the final the Monday after that.

A very well written article indeed. While I have seen some people try and do the same, for some reason they never quite went through the argument like you did. For example, you cite some actual historical movies that changed things. That gives you credit with the academic people who want to just shrug you off as another videogame playing hack. Very cool. I like.

On a smaller note, anyone know a good way to make sure Brian sees this and comments on it (his e-mail adress perhaps)? I know he gave me his adress a while back, but, silly fool that I am, I misplaced it. I also know the contact addy on the site seems to be outdated. So, yeah. WOO.
Games as Art 2 should, if all goes as planned, go up TOMORROW, as of which time I'll post a new thread for opinions on that. |
The 8BT contact page lists Brian's email as nuklearman@hotmail.com

Gotta say, excellent article. A little rough on the edges, but the points and examples more than make up for it. Very nice.
Since we are talking about video games as a form of art, then I wonder what you think about video game remakes like in Super Mario Allstars, or changes in japanese games to make the characters more european looking? Perhaps game remakes should be considered seperate from their originals, and seen as something completely different, or should they go the complete entertainment route, and do what Lucas did to the original Star Wars trilogy? Yeah, I know, they're basic art and entertainment questions, but I wanted to bring em' forward. Sidenote: For some reason, alot of the apostrophes and quotes showed up as either question marks or japanese characters. Just letting you know somethin's up with the site, at least for me. good article, post again when you post the next. |
Wolf99x: I'm beyond positive that that addy is outdated. Thanks, though!
Aero: Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it. The videogame remakes question is definitely an interesting one, when placed through the spectrum of games as art. I've honestly never thought about it before, and it's something I'll have to consider. Maybe an article will show up for it sometime, who knows! :P And yeah, I noticed that problem too. I'm not sure WHAT was up there, but I'm trying to get it taken care of. |
I didn't have any problem with the website. It looked just fine to me. then again, I don't use IE or Netscape.
|
It is art... Though have you ever seen the Scarlet H games out there? I dunno if art really makes sense in relation to them.. But video games should be right up there with movies as art, as some "games" are becoming movies with a couple fight scenes for the player...
And if you want Brian to see it, pm him on the forum. Kurosen He usually responds when he's on, and he's good about it. |
