The PROMETHEUS Internship - A Supergenius RP - A Signup

"They all laughed at my theories! They called me mad! But now I'll have my revenge!"

If only it were so simple. They laughed because you WERE mad. They laughed because your inventions crumbled when unveiled and your theories turned to gibberish. You wept when you saw your equations riddled with childish errors.

But you know what you accomplished: you broke gravity's spell; you programmed a computer to dream; you banished death! These weren't delusions or lies!

Maybe they were right.

Or maybe just one more experiment will show you the truth. You can do everything you said. There's a price to pay, but you can do it. And you're not mad. The things you do...maybe they're not right. Maybe your peers would recoil in horror. But you're not mad. No, you are a Genius.

-------------

So, the RP based off of Genius: The Transgression. I'd suggest skimming over the provided pdf, but feel free to ignore the stat stuff, for the most part.

As PCs, you will be playing the part of recently Inspired Geniuses, people who are able to create things that go against scientific theory in impossible ways. Unfortunately, your creations only work when in your presence: non-Geniuses see only the workings of a madman, and persistence in proving yourself right always ends with your creation, your Wonder, falling apart in the eyes of normals.

Fortunately, some Geniuses have managed to survive well enough to provide safe haven for groups of Geniuses to work together, away from the eyes of the 'normal' world. PROMETHEUS is one of the largest, and, lucky for you, right now they're accepting internships.

-----------

Stats

Not to be read as "die upon die", more an easy way for me to judge how well your character would do in a situation beyond just "Oh, he's the [tough/speedy/magical] one."

Basically, these are just the actual physical things about your character.

Fighting - When removed from all other factors, how good you are using just your body to fight. Also helps if using melee based Wonders.
Shooting - How good you are with ranged weapons and Wonders.
Operating - Determines how good you are at manipulating complex machines, from vehicles to industrial tools.
Mania - Some speculate that Mania separates the Inspired Genius from the un-Inspired populace. All Geniuses inherently use Mania to power their Wonders, but extra points here allows you to use concentrated bursts for a variety of purposes, from overloading conventional tech to instantly understanding foreign Wonders to momentarily supercharging a Wonder.

You have 5 points to spread around those categories.

-----------

Wonders

Wonders are your creations, the impossible inventions that should by all rights not exist, except for your Inspired capability to circumvent natural laws.

There are eight Axioms of Wonder, focused on what the Wonder does instead of what kind of research is used.

Apokalypsi: The Axiom of Discovery, used by the Inspired to construct scanners, mind-reading machines, and communication devices.

Automata: The Axiom of Independence, used by the Inspired to create independent thoughts in their Wonders to produce cogitating computers, clone armies, and slavering zombie hordes.

Epikrato: The Axiom of Control, used by the Inspired to dominate minds and to control the physical and mechanical world.

Exelixi: The Axiom of Restoration, used to repair and improve things both living and mechanical.

Katastrofi: The Axiom of Destruction, used by the Inspired to produce death lasers, heat rays, poison gas bombs, and other instruments of devastation.

Metaptropi: The Axiom of Transformation, used by the Inspired to perform "alchemical" experiments, to change shape, and to graft parts from different creatures together.

Prostasia: The Axiom of Protection, used by the Inspired to create suits of armor, protective shields, and sanctuary screens.

Skafoi: The Axiom of Travel, used by the Inspired to create everything from wheeled vehicles to rockets to teleportation devices and dimensional gates.

Frequently, Wonders will use a number of Axioms in order to function. For example, Katastrofi is frequently used to give Wonders an 'offensive' component (shape-changing rays, for example), while Skafoi is required if any sort of meaningful mobility is to be achieved.

You start off with two points to put into any of the axioms, and can create two Wonders within those axioms. (Later on you'll be able to pool together your Wonder points to create team Wonders)

Name: Cody Willard

Appearance: Everything about Cody seems slightly alien. His hair, long and black, falls awkwardly about him obscuring his face from view almost perfectly in one big disheveled mess, his nose reaches out far enough from the hair to seem to point at you, his eyes, when seen, shine a trange brown hute that is a bit more bright than it ought to be, his fingers are long and always seem to be angled wrong. He seems about regular height for most of his features, but that seems wrong in a world where normal doesn't always happen. To be honest he gives off a sort of aura of weird, and even before he was a Genius he was like that. He tends to wear casual clothing as was typical for his old job as a psychologist. Never make a patient feel like one unless it is necessary.

History: All Cody's life he wanted to be a psychologist. Don't ask him why, but he just did. Maybe it was because during one on one conversation people didn't fell uncomfortable around him. Maybe it was because people had a tendency to let all their problems out to him in secret like he was Barbra Walters. Perhaps it was because he loved playing with the mind, repairing this and solving that. It was all a rush really, and he loved it. He loved it so much that he was willing to set all his life up to become it.

After all that college work, and a few years of building up his own private practice and it seemed like for the rest of his life he could be completely happy with his existence.

Then came his miracle patient.

One schizophrenic, the holy grail, the big boss, the final enemy of all psychology and he was set on curing her without drugs. A feat so rare that statistically he was better off trying the lottery, he was confident though, he was always confident. A few weeks later and she was cured.

People asked him how he did it, how a simple psychologist could pull off such a feat. He had no idea how to explain it, and by the time he was finished trying he had been put on notice by the board.

See what he had done was the same as always, he stepped into the person's shoes, sampled their reality. Dug deep deep inside and dragged them out through the deepest vestiges of their mind into reality again. Of course this time he had to explain he had literally crawled into her brain and forced her to become sane again. This was no small feat of persuasion, it was mind control.

The board found that he must have lost his mind, and after scrutinizing the actions he had they soon found his miracle was suddenly quite mad again when she killed someone. he didn't know how they had done it but somehow they had destroyed his work.

His life, his job, his reputation. All of it gone in a moment. He didn't understand. He wasn't mad, he had really cured her. They had messed her up, put her under pressure, didn't let her slip back in, they should have let her BE!

Then he found out all the truth. Of being a Genius, of the powers of Epikrato, and his unusual skill at it, and finally about PROMETHEUS. He had no life in the psychological society anymore, but he would not let his journey end here. HE would master his axiom. He would conquer minds. He would control. Cause it was all a rush and he loved it.

Wonders:The Translator: If one can negotiate with those who hae a broken mind one can repair or even further complicate the thing. The trouble is if you meet a patient with a different language then you can't communicate the ideas correctly. The Translator was the solution, a strange looking microphone that seems to be made of gray matter that pulsates softly with it he could speak the broken language of a schizophrenic, translate to the distant alien language of a psychopath from another planet, but even stranger, somehow it can translate him to the very language of the universe. He is still working out all the bugs for the thing, but has thus far installed two settings of note (constituting the two wonders he has):
Peripheral psychology: Manipulating the mind from the outside seems easy enough, but some people refuse to look at the big picture, the mind is EVERYWHERE in the body. Every muscle has a nerve and by working with the peripheral nervous system like he would the central he can make a person move as he wants them to. From attacks, to jerky movements, he can even force reflex actions to knock people out, unleash their fears, and even blind them with rage.

Quantum psychology: The whole world is a hive mind according to morphogenetics. This means that with enough psychological pull one can make even the inanimate listen to him. With quantum psychology he can force objects to do the most basic of actions, such as a car to start and drive according to his directions, to even some more amazing feats, like telling a lamp to travel across the room. If he tells it so it more often than not does, as long as he has the will to make it work.(for the more impossible actions, like telling a lamp to float when it lacks motor functions to do so, he has to exert himself further the bigger it gets)

One thing I might not have made clear: Wonders are, first and foremost, physical inventions. Technically, besides Mania, you're basically just physically normal human beings who can create impossible contraptions.

That being said, everything looks good Overcast besides the lack of any inventions. However, you could say that Cody cured his patient with a 'mind helmet' (sorry for the amazing creativity, just woke up), and that he made some sort of glove or goggle device that allows him to control peripheral and quantum psychology (good use of mad science-y terms, by the by).

In regards to the Wonders as presented, Peripheral is good, but I'm going to say that fully technological beings (androids, etc) and the strong willed can better resist/nullify the attempt, and you can only influence/move one limb/emotion at a time (no full body control).

Quantum is also good. Since you have some points in Operating you can remotely operate most things plugged in or running, but can't use the telekinesis aspect to reliably attack (which I think you sort of figured on anyway).

But yeah, good start.

Overcast 04-30-2009 01:48 PM

Ah sorry I didn't realize that was a rule here. I was running off the game system and I had read in the Epikrato section that their Wonders were mostly dependent on things like ridiculous psychological theory, and so they can have internalized Wonders rather than physical ones. Having mind control devices seemed more of a combo of Epikrato and Apokolypsi.

I think we are on the same page with peripheral, save for the knock out(the body is told all its blood needs to go to the legs, main reason people get knocked out by punches), fear(flight, in the fight or light response), and rage(fight, in the same response) reflexes he is basically tugging them around like a really morbid looking puppet. It isn't real mind control, it is in fact a bit sloppy looking all in all.

And yeah I was pretty sure I needed a point in Katastrofi to make it behave like a weapon or Skafoi to make it move just ridiculously fast.

I'll get to his edits in a moment or two, I think I'll have to take a point in Exelexi since Epikrato isn't a real technical field, its prime advantage being true and noninvasive mind and reality control, and I'll need a more technical one in order to allow Cody to cause improvements on his own mind and cause the almost psychic effects he has.

Great, it's starting and now I can't play because I'm, for the most part, stupidly far out of contact with the internet and will be for most of the summer.

Really wanted to try this. Anyway, I told a friend who was interested that it was starting, so they should be along to join you soon. Back into the internet-less gulf of summer!

Overcast 05-29-2009 12:01 PM

Thanks much Viridis, a shame you can't join us but it is good to see it may finally be coming to life.

Viridis 05-30-2009 01:02 PM

Have fun guys. If I had one suggestion, it would be to include a Catalyst and maybe a Foundation when describing your character. Helpful for understanding the motivations.

Overcast 05-30-2009 01:38 PM

Yeah I had those in mind from before, figured his Catalyst were the weeks of yelling back and forth with the absolutely mad patient he had trying to get the high ground in her psychological process, an odd sort of Hoffnung in that no matter how hopeless it was he always retained his belief he was going to win. I believe as a madman who primarily uses his voice as his mode of altering the world he was made to be a Director.

It really is a shame, Viridis. We'll be sure to have a few rounds in your honor.
