I had an experience

Last night I was at this Eagle Scout Award Banquet and the man sitting next to me had a heart attack during it. Another man and myself helped to lie him down and a woman there kept trying to talk to him and tell him to keep breathing. I had to check his pulse when he quit breathing and sure enough by the second time I did I could no longer find a pulse. So the guy and I got scissors and cut his shirt off so the man could start performing CPR. I had to sit there the entire time. Eventually the medical team showed up and they started using that electric shock thing on him I can't remember what it's called right now. But anyway it was the most horrible thing I ever saw I just saw his body flopping around everytime they did it. It was dead silent in the room except for the medics and that sound from the machine no one elsed moved a muscle except for those who had their head down praying. Finally they had us head out but not until an extremely long time of watching that scene. I felt so helpless. Like I should be doing more. I never saw anyone die ever before in my life. It felt sad and so weird at the same time. That sad part was I was talking to that guy not even 10 minutes ago and then this happened. I looked at his eyes and you could see that they were lifeless. :(

It made me really think that life is so short and you never really know what's going to happen. Normally I think nothing of it when ppl I don't know die. But this man who I only knew his name from hearing the woman talk to him I cared whether he lived or died. I had to see it for it to affect me. Is that morally wrong? I always thought of it as I can't worry about the whole world as I would constantly be worrying. I always try to help ppl when I see that they need help but is that ever really enough? Must I outreach even more? I was also thinking that ppl never unite more than when there's some sort of tragedy or devastation. Why is that? Shouldn't ppl care about each other all the time? It has to strike close to home for it to strike them.

Then it becomes even worse when ppl profit themselves off of tragedies and such. I personally can't stand that. They use ppl's emotions to work for their own benefit. Or they simply use it to get attention or make themselves look like better ppl. These events can be used to spread hate also. Ppl want someone to hate it always looks like. They need the action to had some excitement to their rather boring lives or to poke fun. A lot of ppl just disgust me. Well it was rough night anyhow. Any questions or comments?

for the record, that thing is called a de-fibrilator.

thats a scary feeling, knowing that anyone, anytime is vulnerable. I had a friend in high school who died of a heart attack playing basketball. The kid was 16 years old, and in perfect health, then one day he just dropped onto the pavement and was dead before the paramedics arrived. It really makes a man think.

Just out of curiosity, what instances are you thinking of people profiting off of death? the only thing I can think of is the death tax, yet another example of government sticking it's hand where it doesn't belong.

I would say that the coffin people are profitting of death too.

guess what? death is a commercial spin off of a natural body function! just because our public stigmatizes death, doesn't mean that its wrong to treat it like any other normal part of life. the exploitation of death is something new, since pre-WWI graves weren't really marked, or signified much, but is only a symptom of the effects of secularization in the western world.

Oh I was thinking of ppl selling shirts and such like right after 9/11 just for instance. I think that was disgraceful.

Lucas 04-23-2004 06:25 PM

why?

MP37a 04-23-2004 07:18 PM

Its just my opinion that making money off something in which so many ppl are hurt like its no big deal is wrong. Probably some ppl do because they need the money and I understand that but for others its a way to make a quick buck. They just play off ppl's emotions. It's ok to commemorate an event but not turn into an item equivalent to some cheap novelty. But that's just me.

you mean like the patriotic shirts? whats wrong with those? the vendors are merely providing a service, it's the people who buy the shirts who might be exonerating death,

besides, patriotism flows strongest during national tragedies and national holidays. It reminds people where they are, and what it is thats being threatened.

No not those damn I wish I had example to show. Hmm oh well. Anway I just happened to be up in New York a little while after 9/11 and they were selling a whole bunch of crap that it actually made me sick to see it. There's nothing wrong with the patriotic stuff. There was a certain one I had in mind that displayed like the towers like blown up. It was disgusting. It's not just that it's all the games they put out too like I remember one they had you flying airplanes into the towers for points and stuff. I don't understand how ppl could be so sadistic like that.

Death can be very shocking.

My Grade 10 PE teacher, one of the best teachers in the school and in prime physical condition, (and all around great guy) died of a heart attack, just two days after the semester ended. I walked into his office the day before he died, and I said to him that it was a pleasure to be one of his students. we conversed about the school year, the class, and things like that. For the life of me, I don't know why I went in there just to talk to him, but I am thankful I got that last chance. what should happen when I come back the next day? I find out he died of a heart attack.

I guess my point is to show those around you that they are truely appreciated. if you don't do it now, you may never get the chance again.
