Untitled Sprite Comic

I've yet to name the sprite comic, but I think it has some potential. Mirai helps write the script and I do the artwork. Also, I may change the font in the near future. So, without further ado, page one!

This page is better! Sorry for the double-post. Normally I would delete my previous post, edit this in and repost, but since the previous post is the first post I can't really do that.

EDIT: Holy shit, I got the same color as the forum page by complete accident. I am very tempted to leave it like this.

So, basically, this is 9-bit Theater?

Kim 06-04-2009 04:07 PM

There are definite similarities, especially with these first few pages as I haven't really gotten a chance to properly show the character's personalities. As it goes further along, the differences will become more apparent. Being too similar to 8-Bit was one of my main worries with this, so I've put a lot of thought into it being different, though it might not seem like it.

A little info about the characters...

The two characters are Argyle, an extremely lazy human with a superiority complex but lacking the intelligence to justify it, and Mok, an intelligent troll who is good at heart and wants to set an example for Argyle. Despite their frequent arguments both consider each other friends. Argyle likes to make up stories of his accomplishments to try and impress Mok, who knows that none of them are true. Mok, often tries to get them hired for quests to help people.

Neither wanting to kill the other puts it far ahead of any other 8-bit inspired sprite comic I've read. Actually, pretty much the majority of sprite comics. What's with sprite comics and the protagonists wanting to murder eachother?

I'm still calling it 9-bit until you make a title.

I like this premise!

Noncon and I have been shooting virtual Nerf basketball with ideas for a while. A majority of the problem is getting some decent sprite work so he can do the art, but we're having fun toying with future prospects of Argyle and Mok.

What's this? Hints of a plot? You'd think so, but you'd be wrong.

EDIT: Changed a speech bubble and made ninja more faint in earlier panels, upon Mirai's recommend. Also, facepalm sprite I've been using is thanks to Bluestarultor, as I forgot to say as much earlier.

Are FF sprites all you need? Because I can point you guys to a pretty darn complete site holding sprites from the FF series.

That said, as some constructive criticism, the sprites you have could use some work. If Argyle is supposed to be human, it's not that hard to fix his elven ears. Also, Mok's bracers are too similar in color to his skin. A lighter yellow might be appropriate there.

Really, don't feel too badly about modifying the base sprites. What you have are essentially recolors, and there's nothing at all sacred about keeping the original shape of things, or as you've shown, even keeping within NES palette constraints.

I have a decent amount of FF character sprites, at least from the first one. For the bracers, I meant for them to be gone. Guess I messed up on the color.:sweatdrop With the elf ears, just didn't notice the ear shape, I'll get on fixing that.

It's not that I fear modifying the base sprites, it's just that, other than recolors, I'm not very good at it. I am trying to modify the ninja sprite for an upcoming comic, though.
