SO I think I might want to buy a netbook
I have been laptop-less since a similar incident to what Shiney is going through with HP (Incidentally, with HP) and the whole experience soured me on owning a new one for a long time.
Well, long story short I think a netbook is right for me since I have a powerful beat of a PC and would only really need a computer that I could do work on with the occasional game of Starcraft or some such older game. I know a little about netbooks from the older threads you guys started, but I was wondering if there was some new stuff on the netbook scene and was hoping you guys might help me out. My maximum budget is 600 dollars and as far as I know that would get me any netbook of my choice and the RAM upgrade, I was just looking for feedback on what are the best netbooks out there currently. |

I'm pretty sure this was regarded as the 'best one' for at least a while, and the netbooks seem to be more solid then full Acer Laptop cases. Beyond that I don't really know, and I'm sorry. |
There are three AspireOnes in this house, and they all work wonderfully.
|
Now can that netbook handle full web-browsing, media playback, photos, and light video editing? If so I think I might be able to get my mother one to replace their dying desktop.

Eh, I think that'll be fine, it wasn't a big requirement anyway, just enough to convert files and maybe some basic Windows Movie Maker tasks. But that'll work, thanks for the help.

Since you asked about new stuff on the scene, I'll mention that these 12-inch netbooks that are in the pipeline sound pretty rad. Straining the definition of "netbook" maybe but fuck it if they can keep 'em at less than 3 pounds and with a 5-6 hour battery life I'll happily take a decently sane keyboard size on top of that.

Somebody needs to buy that thing so I can grill them for details on how it works.

If ridiculously high battery life is important to you, the Eee 1000HE has 9.5 hours. It's a bit aged in computer years, but it's basically the same thing as the rest of them, and will handle the same things in the same way.
The key things to look for in netbooks are 1. battery life 2. screen size and 3. keyboard size. Those three things are about the only way any of them differ specs-wise. |

Just because there are minute details that not everyone is fully aware of, does not mean that those details do not matter. This is why I add comments and flavor to all my recommendations, so that they can know what I have personally experienced outside of the bare specs of a system. Also Aspire One's beat the HELL out of Eee's. |
