PirateBay goes legit. O_O

*ahem*

Wow... that's a great way to leave us hanging. They go to jail and now we have napster. Not like there aren't other places. But the PB story is becoming a familiar one.

ARGHHHH!

Bells 06-30-2009 08:43 PM

OUCH! that came out of nowhere.

PB was one of the best ons (not like there isn't quite a few other out there today) but could this be a turning point on Copyright fight against the web?

BitVyper 06-30-2009 08:46 PM

Doubtful. Get rid of one and ten more will pop up.

They've already announced they're working on a Pirate tube, a youtube of copyrighted videos and music clips. It's not like they're slowing down in the slightest.

So you're... lamenting the fact that you canna pirate music anymore? I don't think that's keeping in with the anti-piracy rules on NPF.

Anyways, I think Bit's right. I'm not someone who can find virtually anything I want on the web, but I'll say this - as long as people put music videos of my fave bands on Youtube or Google Video, I'll not go wanting.

I think the rules just say you can't actively advocate it or post links to download pirated stuff, so I think we're in the clear.

PB going down will kinda suck, but there are always others so it's no biggy for anyone who does that.

Just to clarify, this is discussing piracy and the effects of the Sweden court battle that happened earlier in the year. Whether you go to a site for piracy is up to you. It's just seeing how the largest torrent site is coping with the unfortunate news of their CEOs being jailed for a year.

I don't even know that we care about advocacy IIRC I've gotten pretty close to that in the past.* We don't really care what all opinions you have just as long as you're not delving into like means and methods and shit that could get C&D letters mailed to Clevinger's home address or Pierre's dark and terrible fortress in the godforsaken North.

This is one of many reasons for my general anti-4channess and would actually be a reason why we would have blocked people from bringing up Pirate Bay (or I guess the previous non-legit version of Pirate Bay) but I kind of figure there's an implied rule where once the New York Times has covered in existence than there's no point pretending it doesn't exist.

On-topic I think this is mostly just a company taking a stab at buying a brand that's built up a lot of free recognition as a launchpad for whatever e-tailing or whichever other business it is trying to run. The torrenting (aka THIEVING) community will lay down stakes elsewhere, as is its wont.

*I guess the difference would be between something like "Yo I totally pirate shit it's rad" and "Yo you should totally go to The Pirate Bay and pirate some shit".

HAIL HYDRA

I remember Supernova doing more or less the same thing, then there were tons of duplicates similar to Pirate Bay. PB just happens to be their next target.

Internet nerds always find a way to get their stuff for free if they really want to.
So what if they take down another site? Who really cares in the long run, as
Other sites exist in the same format. Honestly once we see how the case was
Handled you couldn't expect anything else to happen to the torrent site. But
Until stuff gets digitalized and corps realize people won't buy stuff that any one
Nerd can crack in his basement, we have to deal with people who're desperate.
Til then, we'll just go about the same way as we always do.
