Heh, look what's making news again...

Looks like AT&T is throwing down with 4chan. I'm sure fun times will soon be had by all.

Quote:

AT&T on Monday confirmed that it temporarily blocked Internet forum 4chan over the weekend after one of its customers was hit with a denial-of-service attack linked to the site.

"Beginning Friday, an AT&T customer was impacted by a denial-of-service attack stemming from IP addresses connected to img.4chan.org," AT&T said in a statement. "To prevent this attack from disrupting service for the impacted AT&T customer, and to prevent the attack from spreading to impact our other customers, AT&T temporarily blocked access to the IP addresses in question for our customers."

AT&T denied that the block was related to the content on 4chan.

"Our focus was on protecting our customers from malicious traffic," according to AT&T.

AT&T removed the block on Sunday night, after it determined that the denial-of-service threat no longer existed.

"We will continue to monitor for denial-of-service activity and any malicious traffic to protect our customers," AT&T concluded.

Christopher "Moot" Poole, 4chan founder, confirmed AT&T's story, though he criticized the company for not giving 4chan any advance notice.
Not quite discussion worthy but a fun quick read anyway.

I don't know much about moot, but I'm somehow surprised by the rationality of the response he gave.

Yeah, it's not even that big an issue as both sides seem rather amicable about the whole situation. I was just kinda surprised to see 4chan in my Google News section. It’s been a while since they’ve made a headline.

This is news. This. This right here ↑. This was printed as news.

Well, it's a long stretch from that time Fox News did a while five minute segment on 4chan and Anonymous calling them internet terrorists and using such wonderful phrases like "lulz...a corruption of the internet term L..O..L which stands for laugh out loud..." and "Some of these people are referred to as lulz killers" on national TV. I was shocked an amazed that any journalist, no matter how crappy, would willingly say that in front of a camera.

Oi, 4chan again. Admittedly the founder sems rational but I can't say the same for anyone else on their forums. All I can say is, goddamnit.

And phil, are you kidding me? I mean really, THAT was in print? Is there nothing better to put in print other than twitter and 4chan? Well, then again I suppose since a local college is offering classes on how to use Twitter, I should not be shocked at all.

Whut. Is it like... a fifteen-minute, one-session class?

One can only hope.

Actually no. Its a month long course that according to the description covers all features of Twitter and how to use Twitpic. I know, I was mortified too.

Edit: The cost is $49, and there is also and "Mastering Twitter" class, also for $49

More Edits: Still don't believe me?

Frankly, I'm not surprised moot is a down-to-earth individual. I find a lot of people who start successful communities are, regardless of what forms around them. Zenhex is a very unfriendly place, with the mods wielding absolute and unchecked power, and a hell of a lot of abuse of it through either favoritism or misuse. Zen, on the other hand, was the first or second reply in the first thread I made there and was so nice and casual that I didn't even realize he was anyone of importance until another member told me so.

To be frank, my experiences on the few forums I've joined have indicated to me that there are only a few ways to build a living community, and that one of the best is to be an overall decent individual, or at least one who's personally concerned with the community at large.
