Julford's thread of "Hey, I just bought Slayers!"

Went to Best Buy earlier today to pick up a new mouse (The old one was crapping out and would randomly become unresponsive) and forgot my number one rule: I'm not allowed to even GLANCE at an anime isle without someone there to talk me out of it.

Things I almost bought:

Gundam Seed Destiny (I haven't seen much of Gundam Seed, which Destiny is the sequel of)
Digimon (Had it been seasons 1, 2, or 3 I'd have bought it, but it was Data Squad which I know nothing about)
Elfin Lied (Have disks 1 and 3, but borrowed 2 and 4 from a friend years ago. This was a full set, though, and damned if I'll buy something twice)
Gurren Lagann set 3 (Had episodes 19-27 on it, but I am REALLY trying to wait for the box set. Being unemployed makes being a fan hard)

Things I DID buy:

Corded mouse (I've lost two wireless USBs for mice in the last year. That doesn't include the wired one that just broke down today) - 20$
Slayers collection (Which includes Slayers, Slayers Try, and Slayers Again) - 54$

Things I WOULD have bought:

Zeta Gundam collection (I loved the series. I know they had these back in December, but they haven't had any since June, my first time in the store since then)
Gundam Wing collection Vol. 2 (I have the first half, want the second half)

tl;dr - I shouldn't go shopping by myself.

EDIT: ANYWAY, REASON I MADE THE THREAD - General reminiscing about Slayers. Who here has watched the newest season? Any good?

I remember watching it on a channel that played it with subs (International Channel, I think), and falling in love with it. I haven't watched it much since then (An episode or two on Youtube), but I've been craving the show.

What very little I saw of Slayers seemed to be generic fantasy anime with too many boob jokes and ridiculous outfits. I haven't seen much though, so take that with a grain of salt. It might get/be totally rad and just wasn't my taste, or I wasn't watching the rad parts yet or something.

Nah, that's pretty much what I remember. I mean, the first episode was pretty much typical fantasy BS complete with stupid ineffective bandits and a dragon. The Lina blew up the town that'd hired her to save them from the dragon and I was smiling.

Forgot to mention I got the OVA collection a couple years ago. Saw them, which mostly consisted of Naga having huge tits and an outfit that makes the FFX-2 cast look modest while she made fun of Lina's breast size. Also, magic and general funnies. I enjoyed it, at least.

I enjoyed Slayers. It is actually really funny. I haven't gotten around to watching the new season yet, probably will when I can find it but till then. I'll just watch the old slayers seasons.

Some of the crap they go through is extremely entertaining. 1st 2 seasons are my favourite. 3rd is okay.

Xellos is by far my favourite character. Why? Well.....That is a Secret!

But if I can find the new season I'll definitely get it.

I watched the first three seasons and all the movies. I hate that series so much. So, so, so much. Lina could be a fun character if the author put her in any situation beyond "save the world again," but that's what she always does. It's like DBZ, except everyone is Goku, but only Goku 1 knows Kamehame-win. The episodes where nothing happens are the only ones I can stand, but the power levels and random out-of-nowhere "Heh heh, I'm the real bad guy" crap... and Lina always winning with some BS "kill the world but maybe not" spell at the end of every season... angry face.

Really, I just hate it for how good it could be, as well as the time I wasted watching it waiting for whatever made BraveFencer Mike enjoy it so much. But I really, really hate this series.

The movies, excepting the first one, were ok. The last one was the best, since it had antics with the whole cast. The antics were all I enjoyed in Slayers.

Edit: I forgot, I watched the OVAs as well. They were tolerable, because Naga is a good foil to Lina and they didn't all end with "Giga Slave, Giga Slave +1, etc." Probably why I could stand the movies, too.

Yeah, I can definately remember something along those lines. I saw the end to one of the seasons all those years ago (I was ten, so this was... 1999? Damn).

But I mean, I can't blame something for copying the DBZ formula so long as it pulls itself off well. From what I've seen of the OVAs and the first couple episodes, it does just that >.>

Prepare for disappointment. But, hey, may as well watch it at this point, since you bought it. There's a bit of entertainment waiting for you by season three, namely Filia and Xellos.

krogothwolf 08-06-2009 09:11 PM

Yeah those 2 were entertaining together.

I think there's more then enough idiotic episodes in between the lina save world ones that it should keep him entertained. I don't understand the need to always have the heroes always saving the world. I loved the ones where she was either a mercenary or just plain greedy looking for something she wanted as those could be pretty good episodes.

phil_ 08-06-2009 09:15 PM

Krogo, if those kind of episodes were what the show was based around, I'd probably like it. But the main thrust of the narrative is always "go find the guy to Giga Slave" after a few episodes in each season. Now, I'm going to say that I haven't watched last year's season, but I'm also going to say that no one's going to get me to watch it without promising me the world. I've already wasted enough time on this show.

krogothwolf 08-06-2009 09:19 PM

You got it all wrong phil. It's go find the guy to giga slave twice in each season, plus its worry over whether your spell will destroy the world first. Usually its 4 episodes of hunting the guy, 2 of worrying and 1 of fighting guy in each arc with the rest as joke episodes. If she only saved the world once every 3 seasons it would be a really good anime instead of a good anime with really lame parts in it.
