I simply can't believe I'm basically the only Bob Dylan fan around here.

I've already come to terms with the fact that I'm the only ELO fan here. That I'm one of a tiny handful of Flaming Lips fans is also something I've since come to accept. I'm okay with these things.

But Bob Dylan? Really? He's been around since practically forever, and from what admittedly little I've heard of his work (I only have one album of his yet), it's pretty great. Maybe it's because I posted about it in that open music thread instead of starting my own thread.

So, c'mon. Recommendations? Comments? Complaints? What about when he went electric? When he abandoned electric? When he invited electric back for a little while, sort of on a trial basis, and then decided it wasn't working out between them and stacked its stuff on the lawn, but kept having illicit trysts with it at parties and in the back of his car? Is his voice really that shitty, or do people tend to exaggerate about that? ('Cos I don't see what the fuss is, but then the album I bought is from all the way back in 1965.)

not really my thing, I guess

He has a few good songs, and he was/is a definite influence. That said, even counting his "more popular" songs that I enjoy, I really can't stand listening to him for very long.

I made a post actually.
So Desire is good album, though there's couple of those protest songs by Dylan which you shouldn't believe.

Also, check out Traveling wilburys. Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison doing music together. There was a drummer also, but can't remember his name.

Other than that, I feel like I'm killer of music threads. :/

The Traveling Wilburys are quite simply awesome, yes. I say this as someone who's already kind of a big fan of George Harrison (and who grew up with the music of Tom Petty in regular rotation at home).

For what it's worth, I like what little I've heard of The Flaming Lips and ELO.

Dylan... come to think of it, I haven't listened to him in a while, but I went through a phase where I was collecting his and other classic artists' stuff on vinyl. I saw him when he was touring in 2002--my brother (who's admittedly the bigger fan) said that when he saw him around 2000 it wasn't too inspiring, but I remember him being pretty damn lively for a 60-year-old.

As far as a personal favorite, I'd probably give that to Blood on the Tracks because the whole album is solid and I have a soft spot for "Tangled Up in Blue." I don't know if I'd call it the best, but I always prefer something personal/poignant/intimate to being clever.

(Also, George is totally my favorite Beatle, but that's a different topic.)

Dylan is made of win. End of story.

He's a cool guy but I can't really enjoy listening to much of his stuff. Too folksy and, well, I like to call him 'mumbles' nuff' said. I actually prefer his son's band.

While I'm not a fan of Dylan's singing, his music is excellent. Some of my favorite Hendrix songs were written by Bob Dylan.

And no ELO fans here? They are an amazing band. Admittedly, I only have two of their greatest hits CDs, but I don't buy music very often, so I usually find those to be the best to buy when I do buy music.

I don't know what kind of crazy sections of the forum you been hanging out with. ELO are amazing and the Flaming lips are rocking.

I remember I went to see Dylan live in a concert about a year or two ago and his voice really is that shitty. He totally just sat in a chair and mumbled the whole time. Gah!
I still love a lot of his work though. Mostly I like the poetry of a lot of his lyrics. He is very interested in classical studies and incorporates a lot of such references into his songs- I even had a lecture about it once for classics. As a classics student its awesome to pick them.

The Flaming Lips are great and all but I swear I just need to be in The Flaming Lips Mood for me to actually want to listen to them, which is weird, but I guess I've just got my bands/playlists for everything.

But I'm going to second a majority of what was said - yeah, very folksy, very influential but I've been spoiled by contemporary music.
