Jet Helm Required! The Lufia 2 Let's Play

Some of you may have seen it. Some of you may have only heard of it in rumor. Either way, you cannot escape this Let's Play.

Lufia 2 is a turn-based RPG where the battles are initiated Earthbound style, at least in dungeons. The combat borrows from Dragon Quest, and there is a lot of puzzle solving blatantly ripped off inspired by Legend of Zelda. The plot is that you are a non-silent protagonist who finds out it is his destiny to... go around the world and fight monsters. Oh, and there are some super beings called Sinistrals, but I doubt they're important.

Chapter One - Mirai teaches NonCon the ropes. NonCon takes over silent protagonist duties for Maxim. (No Game Sound)

Aw man the collaborative LP needs my talents!

Important Note: I have the Jet Helm. I guess it is required to beat Gades, some boss who you can lose to and the story goes on. I ain't losing to him, though.
Ha.

Haha.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Yeah, good luck with that. Next you'll be saying you want to beat the Ancient Dungeon before advancing the story [/Lufia2Reference]

But no seriously, forget beating that Gades. He's quite literally stronger than the final boss. All the Jet Helm is good for is getting to move before he does, and it doesn't help when he can kill half the party every turn (Unless you grind the hell out of your levels)

Kim 08-22-2009 02:55 PM

Now I want to pull it off out of spite. So is Jet Helm the only item with Sluggish or whatever? Do I even get anything cool for beating him?

Julford Hajime 08-22-2009 03:07 PM

Your reward for beating him besides rediculous exp and gold (The end bosses give 50000 of each, and I think Gades does here as well) is a sword that breaks the fuck out of the game.

It's slightly, slightly outclassed by endgame equipment, iirc, but I know it has an IP attack that hits an enemy 8 times. Basically, it's a one-hit kill on nearly every boss (I think only the optional bosses can survive) for the rest of the game, if a basic attack alone from the weapon-stronger-than-what-you-should-have-for-90%-of-the-game won't kill them.

And for realz, it's not worth the grinding. I've beaten that boss twice, once on a 4x Exp runthrough, and another on a glitch runthrough (There's a level 0 glitch that I used to give Tia rediculous stats and 999 HP. Makes the fight possible without grinding, but breaks the bejeezus out of the game. Enjoy ten minute loading screens at save points!). On the 4x run, I think I was hovering somewhere around mid-30s just to survive the fight.

When Lufia 2 wants to throw a broken-ass boss at you, it knows what it's doing.

EDIT: At that point, I beleive Jet Helm is the only stat reducer you have for enemies.

SOMETHING YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT STAT UP/DOWN SPELLS: I watched through Chapter 3 so far, and you were confused about how Sluggish worked. Any time a spell increases or decreases a stat, it's by a set percentage (Either 50% or 25%, I can't remember which). Every time that spell is used on that target again, it cuts the gain by half (So a 50% boost/drop the first time would become a 25% boost/drop the second time, 12.5% the third, and so on).

I have to say... I don't want that sword. If I had it I'd use it, and I don't want to use it. I mean, I'm not afraid to grind to get a really good weapon that lasts a while, but if it OHKOs the bosses, then fuck it. I want at least some challenge.

Julford Hajime 08-22-2009 03:16 PM

You can obtain the weapon normally through the course of the game if you try the bonus dungeon (It's 100 floors of randomly generated hell, don't do it!), but even then your chances of finding it are slim-to-none on account of the random generating-ness. Also, it might be a treasure you can't even take out of the dungeon, I can't recall (I just remember using it on the boss at the bottom).

*Psst* Look at edit above. I'm too lazy to copy/paste >.>

Also, feel free to share your thoughts on the LP itself. Good? Bad? Average? Is there anything you'd change or do differently?

Julford Hajime 08-22-2009 03:53 PM

It's been okay so far. Chapter 3, as you've said yourself in the videos, comes off really dry and uninteresting more or less because you've already had to do the run a bunch of times and lost it from technical problems.

Chapters 1 and 2 were great, though. Lufia 2's a favorite of mine, though, so I have a hard time not liking anything related to it. My bias makes me a non-trustable judge >.>

It's been a long time since I've played that game, but I'm like 90% sure that rows work the same as in every other JRPG ever.

Which is to say, why is your squishy on the front lines and your strongest melee attack/def in the back?
