SCEA Meeting Aug 5th Notes
Aug 6 2009 ? DRAFT FOR COMMENTS

Sony PS3
・SCEA reiterated plans to sell 13 million PS3s this year
・Big announcement back half of year they can’t talk about (potentially price cut of PS3 to reach hardware goals)
Motion Controller
・Spring 2010 launch (March in JP)
Yakuza
・Could put Japanese games directly on PSN for download in a special Japanese Import section (pricing $9.99 to $39.99 for full game).
Valkyria 1937
・Could bundle with PSP as well.
Sonic Anniversary
・Could put out collectors edition with all old sonic games on one BD disc.
PS2 emulator for PS3 (confidential)
・SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc)

・For co Marketing money show PS3 controller on TV ads ? similar to EA Madden Spots, NCAA, etc…
DC Digital Titles
・If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively.

PSP Titles
・For SKU differentiation it’s best to offer features that are slightly different from PS3 version.
・Titles that are coming up on PSP are Assassin’s Creed II, GTA China Wars, Resident Evil, Little Big Planet ? all massive franchises.
So I guess we'll be downloading PS2 games and some Dreamcast games off of PSN? Should be good, assuming the fuckers put the games I want on there. I also wonder if the fact that you'll be able to download them will mean anything about playing them from discs.

See this just screams "so god damn fake" to me. In bright and brilliant letters.

The PS3 for a long run already HAD a PS2 Hardware Emulation, then a Software Emulation, which was a conscious decision to remove. Putting it back in the form of specific download-able games strikes me as redundant for the relatively large audience of people that have backwards compatible PS3's already.

Most of this list is stuff already known and announced with little pieces of bullshit sewn in to make them look more believable.

And even if it was leaked from Sega, the odds of Sega knowing fuck-all about what's going on in SCEx is highly unlikely, as they're two seperate companies, and company secrets tend not to be passed between each other by memo.

Especially shit like download-able PS2 games which would be ridiculous.

For the most part, I'd say you have a point, however, the Slim did just come out, it isn't backwards compatible, so to do something like this would make sense. Plus, Sony is focusing more and more on digital distribution as being the future (Example: PSP Go), so that's another reason that it seem feasible.

That, and Sony is just so goddamn terrible at keeping secrets it is sad.

Any particular reason why, or just because?

Well, I'd love it to be true, but yeah this reaks of Too Good to be True. Still, I hope that they'll find a way to make PSP games playable on the PS3. Because, as I understand it, they'll start hosting PSP games on PSN, for the PSP Go.

The average PS2 game is on a DVD disc.

Some games are multiple-disc.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but the odds of them doing a digital distribution of God of War I or II (which are still selling for the PS2) are highly unlikely at best.

Not to mention the programming involved here. It's not something that can just be handed out in a firmware update.

"Let's make the PS3 backwards compatible again!"
"Okay, we need to make sure it doesn't fuckup the hardware backwards compatible people, the software backwards compatible people, or anyone who doesn't have any emulation hardware equipment built in!"

I'm not a programmer. I know a fair bit ABOUT programming, and about how the PS3 works.

I don't think this is something that's really feasible.

Yeah, but for that example, aren't they doing a Blu-Ray release of both God of War games?

This is true, and a fair point.

However, other good PS2 games, like the older Ratchet and Clank games, are still selling as well, and they aren't.

I think with the difference with the GOW games, is that they're going back to the original code & making tweaks so it'll play on the PS3. So instead of emulation, they're changing the game itself.

Then again, I could be wrong on this.

No you're actually very right on this.

Edit: I should clarify.

They're rebuilding the game significantly- the PS2 ran on it's own special coding. The PS3 uses OpenGL, so for the video aspects it's going to require a fairly major overhaul. It's not 'tweaking' so much as "using previously laid groundwork".

i dunno... it doesn't feel like it's too good ot be true. It feels like spin.

I mean, maybe they discussed those things in a meeting. But how many things do companies discuss in their meetings that just never see the light of day outside their meeting rooms?
