Discussion blindness. It can hit anyone.

"What do you mean, you can't see it? It's right there!"

Okay, you probably noticed something is amiss. It's the Discussion forum. After debating certain recent events we thought we'd see if we couldn't get along without a dedicated discussion forum for a while, possibly forever. Apparently it's got a certain reputation.

This time we didn't inform you guys or ask opinions in advance because it's sort of an experiment. (Actually, I asked Melfice. He said he didn't care either way. You know who to blame now (not us)).

What does this mean for the immediate future and for the threads that were in Discussion? Well, they're all in General now. Feel free to continue on where you left off. From now on, all rules of General apply. And just like when we did the General/Off Topic merger - in fact, now more than ever - it's up to you to set a tone for your threads, silly or serious.

Professor Smarmiarty 09-26-2009 03:23 PM

Are we going to move the active threads from discussion over to general or are we just leaving them behind?

:shifty:

Oh, and it's really all of them, not just active ones from the last month or whatever one could have done. I can't in good conscience hide 600+ threads away.

Actually I can but maybe some of you want to look at old threads sometime so I figure, whatever. Although it's not proper archiving practice!

Additionally, for reference to all this is an information thread, not a "what are your thoughts" thread. As far as former discussion threads that are now in general, as stated they are subject to the rules of the general forum. If anyone finds that people are not being serious enough and want a discussion forum again, it is for the time being suggested that they go and find one. We may revisit the issue in the future, alternately if we don't feel like actually thinking about it, or are happy not having to deal with it, then we will happily ignore everything you guys have to say.

Thanks and have fun! Remember this is an internet forum dedicated to a badly written, horrifyingly awful, I mean we're scraping the bottom of the barrel webcomic which itself is loosely based on a classic but honestly rather awful sprite-based video game from twenty-five years ago. The story was awful! The execution was decent I have to confess.

Meister 09-26-2009 03:56 PM

Soon it'll be an internet forum dedicated to a terribly depressing comic about a robot and another comic where people punch each other in the face and drink tea a lot!

Just so i'm in the clear with this...

So, after a few days/weeks of letting this run it's course, if we feel like certain changes could improve the forum environment, then it's ok to open a thread to talk about it?

Fifthfiend 09-26-2009 04:23 PM

In general you can start a thread whenever you like about changes you think could improve the forum environment.

We of course reserve the right to tell you your changes are dumb and we're not doing 'em.

As far as this particular change yeah, give it 3/4 weeks and get back to us.

Osterbaum 09-26-2009 05:26 PM

Even though you supposedly aren't interested on our thoughts on the matter, I just wanted to say: I think this is a good thing.

POS Industries 09-26-2009 06:44 PM

And I humbly disagree with Oster, as the rules of the General forum have become murky enough since the Off Topic forum was done away with and to try to mix what used to be Discussion forum-worthy thread topics into the miasma is a perilous venture, in my opinion.

Then again, since we totally can't handle discussing important matters facing our world in a manner befitting adults with a shred of dignity, there probably isn't a point at having a subforum where you have to do that anyway. Also, it means each and every one of us is a perfect fit for a career in politics, so that's nice.

Nique 09-26-2009 06:49 PM

Can we change the name of 'General' to 'Generally Off-topic Discussions'? We could abbreviate it as G.O.D. You know, for fun. And also to piss-off all you heathens.
