Well, I quit.

Extrapolate from there.

That's why I don't do any actual moderating.

...Because we moderate ourselves?

Think about it.

Most of the moderating I see going on comes out of Fifthfiend. Sometimes Meister.

Do you see personal messages too?

From my experience, moderation is best done in a way that once it happens there's no evidence that there ever was a problem, so in that philosophy the moderator who is the most apparently humble usually works out the best.

Depends on the moderating. If someone is behaving poorly, it needs to be done in a way that everyone can see. This way it is evident that action was taken and lets people know what will and will not be tolerated. Furthermore, it keeps people from making claims that the moderators are hiding the moderating their doing or whatever out of cowardice. I mean, yeah, that last one is kind of stupid, but it's what would happen.

This place is one of the few places on the internets where anonymity doesn't empower jackasses. People invest in their screennames, so they, as in life, attempt to preserve some measure of society. Some of us are known for drunken, assholish behavior, but we're people known for that, not some faceless troll getting his jollies out of it. Who is it with that signature? I look at the screen and see your face, I read your words and hear your voice or something of that nature...

"I look at your avatar and see your face. I read your text and hear your voice. There's a human behind every account. The words you type open the screen to the people on the other side."

It's one of the few things I said on my Gaia mule that anyone liked, so I decided to bring it over, just to remind myself that sometimes people appreciate truth.

Man, it's been there for the best part of two years and only a guess? I mean, a pretty confident guess, but still! That would be like someone not knowing who had "Blue Psychic" for a user title! (Admittedly, it's "Moomba! <3" at the moment to fit my moomba-glomping avatar, but this has been one of the few timespans in the past 2 years when "Blue Psychic" wasn't at least included.)

I kind of hate that approach to moderation cause it just leads to people like deleting bunches of posts and nobody putting an explaining note or anything anywhere and you just end up with these big holes in threads and then people end up re-hijacking the thread to ask what happened.

Anyway it mainly looks like I do more modding than Meister cause I post like forty thousand billion times a day and people assume that some of that is probably actual work.

In terms of like infractions / bannings I think we're fairly even over the last few months although part of that is cause I've been trying to ease off of infracting people for every little vaguely rulesbreakingesque thing.
