Warning regarding Deviantart

I've been getting redirected off DA to sites that try install browser hijackers and everything else lately. It seemed to start right around the time they started allowing those really intrusive flash ads that actually caused me to install Flashblock. Anyway, I googled around a bit, and it looks like a lot of people are having this problem, so you guys might just wanna use a bit of caution when browsing there.

After looking at their forums, it seems like the admins there are acknowledging the possibility, but not really caring a whole lot.

Sounds like a job for NoScript.

It really disgusts me that they don't seem to care, though. So much for being reputable.

Yeah, NoScript keeps me safe, and McAfee keeps an eye out, too.

Good to know, though.

Well that's just great. :-\ Looks like i'll be downloading NoScript soon.

Was it ever reputable? Well, maybe it was alright in the pre-2002 days >_>

Thanks for the heads up.

For certain values of "reputable."

Its an addon for firefox that stops scripts in webpages. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722

Specifically, it kills Flash, Java, AND Javascript, and even when you have the option to allow scripts globally, it automatically blocks executable JAR files and XSS. It also updates a lot to make sure you're safe.

Pros: Almost everything about it.

Cons: It takes some work to get everything set how you want it, but more importantly, unless you allow it, it blocks all ads, and thus ad revenue for sites. Most ads are blocked by whoever actually generates the ads instead of what site you're actually at.

To make an example, NPF ads come from googlesyndication. There is no option to allow that server to run scripts only here and not every other damn website that exists(As far as I know of).

So, you can allow all the sites with <Insert ad server for a website you like here>, or none of them at all.

This is assuming, of course, you even want to see ads in places you like in the first place.
