I made a Game (Demo): Cave Up North

As some of you may have noticed already, in case you checked the RPG-Maker thread, I'm currently making a game with the RPG-Maker 2000. (I could use the 2003 version, but that'd mean I have to draw extra sprites for the prettier battle system.) Actually I'm just having some fun with the tool, as opposed to the past, where I tried to make a totally serious game with custom battle system and all the shiznit

Anyway... I'm now going to publish a DEMO because I've never done that before and I just want to know how it is. I also hope you actually download and ENJOY the game, Even though it's pretty amateurish, or even trashy, depending on who you ask.

Story:
Hero is a guy living in Poorville. Somehow Hero believes that he must go to the Cave Up North. He then travels up north and enters the next cave he finds together with his girlfriend only to be told it's the wrong frikkin cave.

Playable characters in the demo:

Hero:
Full Name: Hero
Age: Dunno, probably 16 or so, like all RPG heroes.
Occupation: Hero
Hair color: Black
Info: He's the hero of the Story.
First line: "Thank you for waking me up Mother. For now I won't miss my important date with some creepy old guy."
Backstory: He lived in poorville ever since he's been born and he gets called to a random cave every now and then. the Cave Up North is the first cave he decides to actually visit.

Suzie:
Full Name: Suzie
Age: The same as Hero's, whatever that is.
Occupation: -
Hair Color: Red
Info: She's Hero's girlfriend. Most useless party member ever.
First line: "Oh hi, Hero! I was just going to, like, visit you."
Backstory: Lived in Poorville her whole life. Met Hero.

Lol:
Full name: Rof L. Mao.
Age: I didn't ask him yet, but judging by appearance I'd say he's a bit younger than Hero.
Occupation: Comic relief
Hair color: Blonde
Info: Comic relief character in a comedy story and bad at it. But that's okay because he also punches hard.
First line: "Yes, creeps?"
Backstory: Lived in a yet to be specified village or town, but then decided to move into the cave of the creepy old sage where he learned martial arts and developed a sucky sense of humor.

Booze:

Full Name: Boozedyival
Age: Below 26 in elf years. (Elf years are about three or four human years.)
Occupation: Rock n' Roll
Hair color: Purplish pink.
Info: The only elf ever in the whole world (sharing the title with another elf). Plays heavy metal songs on his guitar.
First line: "Did I hear you're in serious trouble?"
Backstory: He's the only elf ever, so I don't know where he comes from. But he currently resides in Sepatown where he's known to be the greatest knight of the kingdom.

Other noteworthy characters:
Hero's Mom:
Full Name: Hero's Mother
Occupation: Hero's Mother
Hair Color: I forgot, blonde maybe.
Info: Is the mother of Hero
First line: "Hero! Heeeero, Hero!"

Creepy Old Sage:
Full Name: Opa M. Greiss
Occupation: Real estate agent.
Hair Color: Grey
Info: Lives alone in a cave.
First line: "Hello, travelers. Welcome to my office. Come in, come on in. And, oh, please sit down."

Mother Anorexia:

Full Name: Mother Anorexia
Occupation: One of the seven great generals of Master Badguy
Hair Color: Red
Info: Kidnapped the mother of Hero.
First line: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA"

Lord Grimhood:
Full Name: Lord Grimhood
Occupation: One of the seven great generals of Master Badguy
Hair Color: White
Info: Love's to burn things.
First line: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA"

Noteworthy features:
- About 40 minutes of gameplay without doing any optional stuff (not that there's much of it yet)
- Duct-taped fourth wall.
- A ninja
- Is a FULL! Demo.

Treasure chests can be found in dungeons.

If all puzzles are as easy as this they won't even add to the play time.

Download NOW for FREE, no seriously, I'm not trying to sell you anything.

If you find any bugs or goof ups, like a major typo, It would be much appreciated if you could let me know.
Any suggestions regarding gameplay may be considered. Also let me know if it's balanced all right. Yes, you are my unpaid test players.

Additional Info:
- F4 for Window Mode.
- In case the font acts weird there's a file called "rm2k_fp.exe" in the game folder. That should help.
- If the game doesn't work you may want to try to download this file into the game directory, and if that fails you'll have to install the Run Time Package. Though, it SHOULD work without that. That's in fact the reason why the file is so big, but it's definitely less than if you had to download the RTP.
- If you can't hear the song that plays during Booze's entrance it sucks to be you.

Not to bad so far, it's pretty cool. Since I didn't have RPG Maker 2000 I needed the Run Time Package to play the game, just so you know :D

Also, 1 thing that was weird, I was on a lower level and up against the wall when the mob on the upper level bumped into me an initiated combat, is that suppose to happen?

And not to nit pick, is outch when you get hit on purpose to make fun of something?

Though so far its pretty cool. Silly useless Suzie!

The game is pretty fun, I haven't played the whole thing (stupid box rats killed me), but so far it is pretty good.
Opa greiss' comments when he introduces LOL are really funny! "One day he came to this cave and i taught him how to beat people up!"
The sign in Lol's room made me laugh..... poor Lol.
But the funniest thing so far was what the Salesman says when he introduces himself "On my travels i have found many wonders. Today i exclusively sell weapons and armor made of wood!" :D

I had to install the RTP to play the game, but there's a way to let people play without them having to installing the rtp.
Next time add the harmony.dll file to the game, usually that does the trick.

That's not supposed to happen, but it would be very very time consuming to work around that. Yes, all the mobs in the game are that badass.

Ooops. that's not meant to be there, actually. I just got lazy on editing combat specific messages and forgot to change it before releasing the game. I might as well leave it there to make fun of me for forgetting to remove it. But I'm not that cool

Thanks a lot.

Oooooooooooops again. Seems like I forgot more than just polishing the combat vocabulary. Will it work if I upload it so people can downlaod it? (It's a pimped up harmony.dll which actually supports all keys for input commands, but I don't use that feature, yet)

Again, I'm glad you people liked it.

You should zip it so people with dial-up (me) can load it before 4010 also make a description
it wont load now! i don't get it why wont it let me load it!

More or less, the Run Time Package is something to do with running the file. You'll need it, maybe.

It is zipped. But you can't expect the file to magically become 1kb in size just because I zipped it. In fact it's so big so you don't have to download the whole RTP, or shouldn't have to.

The Run Time Package is actually just an assortment of files. If all the used RTP-files are imported (which they are, as far as I know) and the harmony.dll is in the game folder it should work. I say "should" because I currently don't have the possibility to test it myself.

Professor Smarmiarty 10-06-2009 09:29 AM

I reckon if you keep on zipping and rezipping over and over again it'll eventually become 1kb in size.

Lost in Time 10-06-2009 09:54 AM

You know... I always wanted to try that. But sanity has always stopped me.

Anyway, downloading game now to check it out. Because I'm that bored.

krogothwolf 10-06-2009 09:56 AM

So was able to play up to when Booze shows up. I must say, Awesome song! :D

Is there anyway to see how much equipment modifies a stat before buying it? Just so It's easier to figure out when to spend hard to earn cash on?
