Why am I tapping X to open doors?
This is something I noticed recently in games and I dont get it. I mean quick-time events and escort missions are annoying but they are still game play elements, their existance does serve a purpose. But I really dont get this. Its impossible to fail, no challenge to accomplish, never affects game play, does anyone see a reason why game developers decided to put this into games?

So you don't accidentally open the door Yog-Sothoth Jr. is hiding behind cuz he's gonna eat your face off.
It fits more in actiony games where enemies could be hiding in a room or in survival horror games, but it isn't anything that I've really thought about or cared about. |
Never really bothered me. At most its a minor annoyance, and having them automatically open all doors you came up to would bug the hell out of me and probably get me caught and/or killed depending on the game.

'Cause sometimes I just wanna lean on the door, not open it.

Don't worry, you won't have to for long.
With all the motion controls going on, soon you'll be 'slightly twisting the remote in a clockwise direction, and then pulling toward yourself' to open doors. |
You've never played Dnd with the "Open the door, you die" trap? Classic times.

I am not one of that number.
I prefer to be in control of when switches, levers, doors, windows, etc. are manipulated. I'd argue that it also helps you connect with the characters' actions as you play, but I'm willing to bet a decent number of players don't give a shit about that.

Is this referring to tapping A in Batman to pull open grates? I always thought that made sense, since the grate is bolted to the wall. It's GRITTY, man.

Only games I can really recall seeing this in would be the God of War series, where it at least makes sense, because the guy is lifting massive portcullis' or knocking over giant statues with his metaphysical strength, so I get why it requires more effort on the part of the player, because it's requiring more effort on the part of the character. Plus it adds a little more interactivity to the game.
It's like the Test Your Might minigames from Mortal Kombat, except now added into actual gameplay where it makes sense. Never bothered me that I have to do it though. |
Because nobody wants the door-opening-animation/loading-the-next-screen to be going off on a hair trigger every time they get too close to a goddamn door.
