Guys I got good news and bad news
 

Oh no, a Metroid game might contain challenging gameplay and occasional fanservice! This is new and unprecedented!

pretty sure metroid was one of the first games to involve the protagonist running around in a bikini, so its not like fanservice is new or anything.

also, holy shit this news is like months old. why are you so late to the party.

Pretty sure that was announced last E3...?

Regardless I'm actually interested, if tenuously. I don't think Nintendo has done much good with Metroid in recent memory, and since passing Samus over to other developers has been lucrative so far (and hey I looooooooove Metroid Prime) I'm curious to see where this could go.

TBH, no one remembers Samus for running around in a bikini. She's one of, if not the, first action girl on a fledgling system.

Metroid: Zero Mission and Metroid: Fusion came out after Prime 1. IIRC all 3 were roughly contemporaneous.

Anyway we discussed this at the time of E3 and the general consensus was that Itagaki may have been personally responsible for DoA Volleyball and the fanservice would chill out after he left, and as this article I recently found demonstrates that is clearly not the case..

There is like a huge gap between "occasional fan-service," e.g. if you beat the game fast you get a pic of Samus wearing a jumpsuit, and "ridiculous bullshit in the name of fan-service" e.g. as you play, the female characters' jubblies jubble under the influence of your motion controls.

But what exactly are we afraid the are going to ruin?...

It's not like Metroid is any sort of Sanctified bastion of gaming y'know... It went from a immersive novel 2d explorer shooter to a fun (if flawed) FPS. And now they seem to be aiming for the middle ground...

Other than that, if they have a scene were Samus is admiring herself naked in a mirror because she thinks herself as "sexy" i would call that the most character development she ever got....

And I will call it 'tonight's wank fodder'.

Also, I laughed so damn hard at the sixaxis Ninja Gaiden II controls. Oh man. I wanna get the game just for the lulz now.

While they were quite good that's still the only thing they - Nintendo - have made since Super Metroid. I suppose what I said came out wrong - what I meant by "much good" as in "done much at all with" the Metroid franchise.

Yeah, it's a definite concern, but given the fact that Ninja Gaiden/Dead or Alive have more or less wholeheartedly embraced fanservice I'm hoping they understand that this is for their franchise and not Metroid.

Besides I'd be really alarmed if they happened to get that fanservicey given that Samus runs around all day in a giant suit of power armor. Yeah there's the Zero Suit, but Zero Mission made it clear that it's nothing to fight in, Smash Bros out-of-cannon excluded.

They say that they aren't going to make the whole game about Samus' tits, but I'm honestly not sure I believe them.
