Remembering SotC

Last year I went up to my local Gamestop and bought a game that looked pretty decent. What I got was Shadow of the Colossus and it blew me away. Before playing it, I never believed that it was possible to build such an emotional attatchment with a game. It is without a doubt, one of the best games I have ever played.

And now Justin Marks, writer of the latest Street Fighter, is laying his filthy whore's hands all over it... So I figured that now is just as good a time as any to reminisce about it.

Eh, what? Could you post a link, or explain or something?

I think he's talking about it becoming a movie.

Edit: Link

Yeah, it will be terrible.

And SotC was just...amazing in ways I never thought gaming could be. It was a game I needled my dad into buying for me after hearing nothing about it, and I was blown away and endlessly glad I had gotten it. When I lost my copy to a 'friend' borrowing it and skedaddling, I picked it up again at Gamestop a while later.

Totally worth it.

I'll be honest. At first I hated it. The fact that there was nothing but landscape and colossi took some getting used to-- I kept expecting to see something other than lizards and hawks on the journey between the temple and the colossus. Random battles, treasure chest, whatever. The fact that there was nothing to do but ride around got on my nerves at first. By about the fourth Colossus, however, I was completely hooked. The vast, uninhabited nothingness added to the sense of isolation and alienation you get from playing the game.

The only way this could possibly become a decent movie is if it's turned into more of an artsy film than a big Hollywood production. Focus more on the scenery; use a lot of wide shots to enforce the idea that the hero is a small, insiginificant little being in a vast, dead world; experiment with the medium to express emotion without dialogue, like the game manages to do....

....but we all know that's not gonna happen.

Anyone who attempts to make this masterpiece into an action-packed blockbuster movie complete with dozens upon dozens of new characters never actually seen in the game (who all speak English) and/or 'dumbs down' the storyline so the colossi are just evil brutes and the complex morality is gone and it's just standard good vs. evil shit needs to die.

Literally we should pass a law in which any film director or producer who even mutters the words "Shadow of the Colossus" and "movie" in the same sentence is taken to a dark alleyway, and never seen again.

We could always sue the guy for emotional damage, right?
Anyway, I played the game, and I was also pretty impressed, but I never got around to finishing it.

I predict 3 colossi and lots of flashbacks to pre-game events to flesh out the story.

...

FUCK!

I heard this was happening, but I really hoped to god it was one of those vague, "oh hey I heard they're making X movie", but where there's never anything concrete about the project.

This is utterly shit. Games never make good movies, and of all the games to NOT make a good movie it's SotC. Seriously hollywood tries to cash in on this game but leaves something like MGS or GoW or DMC alone?? WTF?!

I will not be watching this.

I predict a dozen collosi, most of whom will be seen taken down one after another in a quick montage section with pounding rock music in the background the same way 300 had a scene where the Spartans took on elephants and rhinos and grenade chucking mystic warriors to pounding rock music.

Also there will be slow-mo as each collosus hits the dirt. You know it will be this way and it will be terrible.

I said this back when the news about that movie first hit but producers aren't interested in making a good movie out of a video game, they only want to generate enough buzz using a known name to get people to see it, even if it's "just to see how bad it is." The strategy is to always keep you hoping the next video game movie might be really good, and it only works as long as it never is.

Therefore my suggestion for this thread would be to accept the movie announcement as one of those undesirable side-effects of modern culture, ignore it otherwise and talk about how good the game was.
