Adding to that point, IIRC the only reason we know Wander's name is because of the Japanese version of the game - I don't believe it's even mentioned.

You assume that's even his real name. As far I knew "Wander" came from a shortened version of "The Wanderer", describing more the characters isolation and lonely quest rather than being his actual name.

There really is no backstory for the guy what so ever, we can't even confirm his real name, how are they supposed to make a full blown movie out of this?? Oh that's right, by completely changing everything that makes it work as a game, throwing in some half cocked "story" and making it action packed nonsense.

Can't wait.

Not perfect, but well done.

That trailer contains literally everything everyone here is afraid will be in a SotC movie.

Okay it stops short of Michael Bay explosions but the addition of a backstory with clearly laid out relations between various characters alone turns the whole thing from a unique story with lots of room for interpretation into Generic Anime [n]. If the game itself had featured cutscenes like this it wouldn't have been as memorable by far.

I'm not against changes as long as they are done well. Nobody should.

Meister 10-11-2009 04:11 PM

I'm not against changes when they're necessary to adapt a story to a different medium, but if the changes necessarily result in the adapted story becoming disassociated from the original idea to the extent that it can't be considered the same anymore, I'm absolutely against changes and also the whole adaptation.

e: what could be interesting is a movie that's, even obviously, inspired by the game but is newly designed from scratch to be a movie. You could make a very good movie using just some elements of the game. But there would be no need to call that "Shadow of the Colossus" and pretend like the two were the same.

That's what a lot of people say about the Silent Hill movie, and I'm still pissed about it. I didn't even play SH1, I'm just pissed Pyramid Head was in there for no damn reason. But it was a change to make it more appealing as a movie, so it's okay that it disrespects the source material, amiright?

The Sevenshot Kid 10-11-2009 04:33 PM

They should just rename the film "Wander and the Colossus" to let them know that it's not the game.

I'm not familiar with the Silent Hill series but I thought the movie was pretty decent. So in my eyes, they did their job right.

1. They won't do that.
2. It isn't simply a matter of having the same name, it's one thing trying to be something it isn't, and it can't succeed.

Exactly.

Well, I am familiar with the Silent Hill series, and I thought the movie was pretty decent. I also don't go all "Serious Business" over my game-to-movie adaptations if the movie itself is enjoyable and not just camp-and-turds.

That said, a SotC movie just doesn't sound appealing at all because it just can't be the same. With some G-to-M adaptations they can at least get parts of it to work right, but this just won't work. They'll just give it a shower and a pretty dress, tart it up in makeup and send it out to the corner to rake in a few bucks off some down-on-their-luck or desperate customers that don't mind a little Herpes and the feeling of shame.

Ugh.

Wander's steel-eyed determined anime dash up the colossus' arm made me just throw up in my mouth.
