Shirts and Copyright laws

Okay, so we finally have shirts featuring the core cast of 8 Bit Theater.

But I thought Brian wasn't allowed to do stuff like this because of copyright laws. (I remember because someone once asked if a paper copy of the comic would ever get released and reading that Mr. Clevinger replied that it could be done, but not in the original sprite style.)

So, has anything changed? Or is this much like the Valentine's Day thing were you are just doing it because you think they won't care? Am I completely out of my depth here?

One of the reasons i closed my store is because site owners complained that any square with an "?" (even one i drew myself) was a copyright violation of Nintendo Property...

So that sort of stuff is weird at best, at least for me.....

Copyright law is pretty fuzzy. I stopped carrying merchandise that had the original sprites on them ages ago just to play it safe. But the internet is saturated with gaming humor T-shirt stores and TONS of them have had original sprites on their products for years without repercussions.

So, what the hell.

I prefer the stylized versions myself. Speaking of, whatever happens to the very stylized set?

I'm sorry, but these actual sprite shirts are pretty sad. I mean, fist they use the really awful overland sprites. Not that the battle sprites are much better, but well a slight improvement is better than none.

And while it doesn't show the back, if you check my user profile, you can see me wearing one of the old sprite shirts that Brian once produced. The back of the shirt repeats the picture on the front page, but also has stats (in FF1 style). Much more interesting than these shirts.

As I remember it, CafeXpress were the ones who told you to stop producing the sprite shirts, and then you went ahead with the current incarnation of the shirts. Not a huge distinction, but I still think its CafeXpress's fault that I can't get myself a new Garland sprite shirt.

I mean, my Garland shirt has held up pretty well so far, and I wear it only occasionally these days..., but its only a matter of time.

THE HORROR!

My 2 cents is that, as long as you choose to dip your feet in these waters, use some of the Custom sprites you have. Those are easily the best ones, specially Ninja-Thief Flying kick and any BM Reaction shot and RM "Eureka" momments!

Seconded. I loved those shirts much more. I still have the BM and Fighter ones; Red Mage was ruined on a camping trip.

Second this. Or Black Mage with crackling hell energy.

Sorry, folks: I am not a custom T-shirt store. It doesn't matter what images I choose, lots of people are going to say "Why didn't you use..." and "You should have used..." and "I would rather you used..." Y'know, like what you're saying right now.

These are the shirts that are available. If they do not appeal to you, then please don't buy them.

I should really buy a t-shirt sometime.
