Windows 7 Comes Out in Twelve Days

I really want to get it, but it would seem that the version worth getting (aka the version with XP mode) is $200. $200 is expensive. With that in mind, does anyone have any sort of info about how well the official release will compare against the release candidate, and any other changes/improvements that will have been made in that timeframe?

I've been able to download it for a few weeks from the university for free, but I haven't decided if its really worth the trouble yet. Maybe I'll do it in a virtual machine or something just to see.

oh, I can wait to get it, I got a free win 7 upgrade with my laptop. Actually, I can wait to get it, but I can't wait to get rid of vista. And yes, I would have loved to get the ultimate version, or at least the business version, but they're kinda expensive and I'm not sure I would use most ot the things besides the XP mode, and my laptop wasn't exactly cheap to begin with :sweatdrop

Technically, because I'm a student, I could get Win7 for $30. On the other hand, I have Vista working pretty well for me and I'm not one to fix what ain't broke. Also, I REALLY dislike the whole extension of the ribbon setup they have going there. It's just too big and "friendly" for my tastes. I'll stick to having as much normal Windows as humanly possible for as long as I can get away with it.

If you're referring to the new form of the taskbar, you can change it around from the right click > properties.

Student-Cheap Laptop with Vista Boot Time: Long as hell.
Hard drive space: Why so low? :(

Fuck-Money PC with Vista Boot Time: Moderate, but too long for my fuck-money tastes.
SSD space: 40GB for Vista, fucking fuck!

Student-Cheap Laptop with W7 RC Boot Time: Maybe 15 seconds. PC barely past POST.
Hard drive space: Yay. :)

Dream of Fuck-Money PC with W7 Boot Time and SSD space: Hell yes.

$200? That must be for the full OS.

I already owned Vista so getting Windows 7, when they had their preorder deal, cost me $60, which is like 50 of all of your dollars.

My fuck-money PC with Vista boots in about 12-17 seconds give or take, for what that's worth.

Yeah, I not really getting too excited about this. Vista works very well for me, and W7 doesn't really seem to be offering anything extra that appeals to me (I also don't like upgrading a new OS on top of an older one, makes me very nervous). I'll wait for the next MS OS on the next computer I get.

Granted, the boot time thing seems to have something to do with 64-bit. All 32-bit machines seem to load faster, despite 64-bit machines having much better hardware.

Alas, the added 20GB on my SSDs is worth it. And it gives me something geeky to do for a weekend.

Edit: Oh and Windows 7 officially supports SSDs, whereas Vista doesn't quite know what to make of them and previous OS' predate the technology.

I think the main reason I'm looking forward to it, aside from XP mode, is that when it comes out there'll finally be decent driver support for it, which, for my particular brand of laptop, there is not, and my computer takes every chance it gets to remind me that there is a problem with my graphics driver.

My 64 bit Dell takes a very LONG time not just to boot, but also to get into suspension/hybernation. My dad's 10 year old laptop is a lot faster at booting and everything the shut down button does :shifty:.
