Life survival kit
Just returned from a weekend of fishing in the upper Adirondacks in NY state. We spent all day Saturday out on Lake Champlain near the Canadian border fishing for trout and salmon, and it gave me a lot of time to think, mostly about how I most likely would have died of hypothermia if I had forgotten my extra socks. The wind had picked up during the day and made the lake so choppy we were getting waves over the side, flooding my boots and soaking my socks. That combined with a 20 degree air temperature changed it from A Lovely Day on the Lake to Deadliest Catch: The Ride. It's times like these you remember the little things that get you through each day.
So what's in your survival kit for life, if you had to make one? |
One ordinary towel.
|
A lighter and a pocket knife. I'm not much of a survivalist of any kind, but if I have fire and tools I'm sure human nature will work itself out.
|
A survival knife (the end twists off to reveal 2 matches, a hook with line and weight, and a needle with thread).
A med-kit (band-aids, Neosporin, aspirin, mole skin, gauss, snake bite kit, mosquito repellent, sunscreen). A cell phone. Wallet ($10 cash in a 5, and 5 ones, 2 forms of I.D., Debit/credit card, insurance card). A flash drive. A warm jacket/waterproof jacket. Pen/pencil and paper. Some deodorant. A backpack, with whatever you need in there (previously mentioned things, as well as entertainment (gameboy, logic puzzle, foot bag/hackey sack, a book) And maybe some food. With all of that one would be able to endure nearly all situations. I don't actually carry all of that around with me all of the time. Just most of it (everything but the first two: those are here at home). |
a box with a spring loaded Boxing glove to snap some sense into me.
|
Add the Hitchhiker's guide to above list and you're set.
|
Thick woollen socks.
A towel. My multitool. My brain. And if I'm canoing, my PFD, my paddle, a whistle, and potentially some flares. |
Extra underwear and pants. I rarely need it, but one chocolate explosion/crotch-seeking paint water spill and you regret not having it.

A boring life that removes me from all travel away from civilization. :J
Very much a city kid, I guess. Well, I did live out in the country, too, so I guess you could say I incorporate a bit of both. But I don't hunt, the only boat in the family is a pontoon boat, which is highly unlikely to lose stability, and I've never gone camping anywhere more dangerous than my own back yard in my life. Given my life as it is, I guess you could say I've developed my own special form of survival kit, which includes: - my laptop and power cord - a couple flash drives - headphones of some sort - occasionally a notebook for sketching - some pens and pencils, plus a sharpener - usually a book or textbook of some sort to keep entertained or busy in case of lack of wireless signal - a track phone, when I remember it, and remember to turn it on, for emergencies only - an umbrella - a jacket appropriate for the temperature, which is most likely at least water resistant |
