Why Do We Kiss?

I was listening to a Ricky Gervais radio show, and they started talking about kissing - and I was wondering, the same as them, why we kiss? With Valentine's Day just 'round the corner, I think it a prudent question.

Because lips are sensitive? The same reasons we put any erogenous zones into contact.

Because it makes us all hot and bothered!

You've got to warm the engine before you cruise down the highway.

It's ver much a cultural thing. Fair chunks of the world just don't kiss (until got westernised anway). It was ver much a greek (and to some extent Roman) thin though romantic kissing is not reall mentioned in their works- more respect kiss used in both greetings and religious ceremonies- still seen in places like Ital and Greece today.
When it developed into the personal romantic gesture we have today is unclear, it was fairly late- in last few hundred years or so.

Which part? There's nothing particularly controversial in there.
