It powers up...but doesn't boot up.
As the title said. I got a new computer, desktop, and the computer powers up, but it won't boot up. Not even the bios comes up.
Could something be up with my motherboard? |

Beep codes or Mobo hex codes would be dandy.
Use process of elimination to rule out individual RAM sticks. (Even if it was RAM, you'd likely hit a fault in the POST rather than BIOS failing entirely.) Do the same with video/sound cards if there's on-board video. Ensure the monitor am worky. (Process of elimination. Not insulting you. Honest.) Double-check all wiring. Especially if you have pets. If you aren't even getting a BIOS showing, it's likely the board itself or the CPU after ruling out all others. You can test the CPU if you have a "spare" on hand (I still get shit for the time I had one...), but the mobo isn't really verifiable without trying another one entirely with the same set-up. (Oh, and mobo = motherboard. Lazy geekspeak.) |
Read the manual for your motherboard if one came with your computer.
Some of them have problem lights/codes that will come on if there's something wrong with it. It could help you diagnose your problem, with a lot more speed and ease than going through the whole process of elimination thing. Which is to say by simply opening your case, turning on the power, and watching to see what, if anything, lights up on the mobo. Some even have codes for bad RAM etc. My old one did, I know. Two number code. Not sure about my new one. |
Yeah, I mentioned those first for a reason, but I'm used to working with bargain lines or old shitty boards, so it doesn't take as high of a priority for me normally.
Anyway, do what Krylo says first. |
Double check to see if the CPU is getting power. Last time I built my PC I missed that crucial step, and it sounds like that is exactly what was happening to me. Forgetting one wire, or if one is unplugged, and it can be annoying to figure out what's wrong with it.

Scotty, we need power!
Yeah, if this is one you built definitely go through and check all the connections. Also McTahr's post.
I had a buddy who had a few of us come over to help guide him through building his machine -- his first build -- and all, but the pair double-checking his connections from the power supply missed one of the connections to the motherboard. So, the machine powered on and appeared to be working but never posted (no beeps, nothing sent to the monitor, but the case fans, CPU fan, and lights were all on) until that was connected. If this is a bought desktop... Well, check the connections anyway. Hopefully you can narrow it down. |
There are no beeps, nothing comes up on the monitior, there's just...nothing.
And I know it's getting power as the heat sink fan is active, along with the two case fans, and the light. |
beep beep this is a post code
Which, as I wrote, is what happened to my buddy until we made the second connection to the motherboard (the 4 pin ATX +12 volt power cable in addition to the 20/24-pin main connection). It's possible you're missing something like that.

Everything was reconnected...still nothing.
