I assume this is the main Pokermen thread now so have a video of a battle from Black/White: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2QG0Ibob44
Didn't see it posted before. |
...Hmm. The sprites are moving. During battle.
*Spit-take* WHAT? |
Not that moving sprites don't reduce me into a frothing frenzy of pure want. But I think I"ll wait until it's inevitably re-made for the 3DS.
|
Entei transformed into Zoroark?
Interesting... |
Seems more like low-resolution models from what I can see. In short, the Stadium line's battle style is carrying over to handheld now.
Not that this is a bad thing, mind. Now we need someone to hack in a soundbite of "IT'S A ONE-HIT WONDER!" |

I'm not personally too hyped for 3DS. I was never into the whole 3D movie fad, I'm not into the 3D games hype, doubt I will be when it hits fad stage. |
So I just got back from ACen over the weekend and I'd just like to let you all know that we had a rousing game of Pokemon Snap with all the Pokemon Cosplayers this year. Most importantly though, I caught me something new!
Who's that pokemon!? |
Jesus that didn't take long.

|
The thing that bugs me the most about that pokemon is that it has a ponytail for no good reason. They're becoming more and more human with every generation.
|
I had a chat with the guy about how he had a costume ready for a game that wasn't even out yet and was just announced like a month ago. He said he started costume creation when the first shaded outline was released.
EDIT: On the other hand.... ...the Catterpie was cute... ...and the Flareon was hot! |
People spent money on those.
|
I'm just saying, it was the best game of Pokemon Snap I've ever gotten to play.

But the first dude is just right out. |

That's more of an honor than sudowoodo will ever deserve.

The eevee-lution family was kinda cool.

But yeah. Pokemon Cosplaying. Too close to fursuiters for comfort. |

Oh man, oh man, oh man...
Back when it was just me and Pokemon Gold, I was going through Mt. Mortar when I ran into my first shiny pokemon ever: A Zubat. I caught it, and he was a part of my team and my favorite out of all of them even after it evolved into a funny looking pink Crobat. But then Gen III rolled around and there was no importing from the previous games and I grew out of Pokemon (until I became an adult and it became fun again, no idea how that works but hey Gen IV!)... So now today, I was EV Training my Dratini in Mt. Mortar in my brand new shiny Soul Silver, when what do I run into? http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...ShinyZubat.png I actually cried a little. |
Caught this on my Gold ROM a few months ago.
BEFORE I bumped into Lake of Rage Shiny Gyarados. I was all HOLY SHIT ITS A SHINY. Last time I bumped into a shiny, I think it was in my LeafGreen ROM, and it was a shiny Mankey that I accidentally KO'd while trying to whittle down its health. Feels bad, man. |
I think I had a shiny Weepinbell and Graveller in Diamond.
I evolved both to Victreebel and Golem. I actually liked shiny Victreebel. Has a sort of withered look it. |
My only current one is Aggron, I caught it as a Aron on my first run through that cave during my playthrough of Sapphire and it's been in my team since. Ported it to my copy of Diamond after beating the Elite 4 in that too. It looks awesome.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u...r_4d_306_s.png Back in my orginal gold I had a shiny zubat and stantler too. Also I saw a shiny graveler once(in diamond or sapphire I think) but it used explosion on it's first turn..... |
So, a Magikarp has an attack of 9 at level 20. When it evolves into Gyarados, it has an attack of 55.
Fucking Magikarp. |
Ya know, despite Gyarados 4x damage vs Lightning, i always have one on my team.
|
Well, yes. Gyarados' 4x Lightning weakness is literally the only downside to using it, so... yeah. Like with nearly all the Dragon types; 4x Ice weakness, but you aren't going to let that stop you.

Gyarados My Starter (D/P Infernape) The Type Opposite of my Starter (D/P Roserade) Psychic (D/P Alakazam) Flying (D/P Staraptor) Random. Sometimes it's a ground type, sometimes its a Pseudo Legendary*, hell sometimes I'll throw out a legendary. *gonna get DS online, anyone have a PLegendary worth trading for?" |
Gyarados may be a fan favorite and all, but I've always thought that Swampert was a more interesting breed of Water Pokemon, as it has only one weakness (4x Grass) and can use Curse with little downside due to being already moderately slow. Also, Stealth Rock.
Lanturn is still one of my favorites though. |
I hate Stealth Rock with a passion, despite having it on a couple of Pokemon just to have the option open.
That said, I have like four Rapid Spinners... most of which are the water type. Why is it that water types learn Rapid Spin so much? I can rarely find it on anything that's not Water. Seriously: Staryu/Starmie, Squirtle/Wartortle/Blastoise, Omanyte/Omastar (Egg Move), Kabuto/Kabutops (Also Egg Move), Tentacool/Tentacruel (Egg Move Again), etcetera, etcetera. LOTS of Water type Rapid Spinners. I mean, it IS pretty obvious in at least Staryu's line and Squirtle's line as to why THEY have it... and the whole Egg Move thing makes sense in context as well (Tentacool/cruel spinning their tentacles, Omanyte/star retreating into shell, spinning it around, though Kabuto/ps is a bit of a stretch...) |
Just caught a Red Gyarados and named him Mr Fish. For obvious reasons.
|
I seriously gotta get more people to battle. Grinding Mt. Silver for all eternity has lost all appeal.
|
Lost to Lance after just barely beating the Elite Four.
Given how easy this game was overall so far, I was a bit surprised when Lance swept my entire team with a LV49 Dragonite. Using only... four moves, actually. I thought it was five, but Walken (my Crobat) was taken out by Gyarados beforehand. EDIT: Just managed to beat him. It was a ridiculously tense match, too. The Gyarados, Aerodactyl, and even the first two Dragonites went down much easier than just Gyarados alone from the last attempt. Then the final Dragonite came out and swept most of my team. I used Revives to stop myself from losing outright, and found that it was slow enough that my Feraligatr could hit it with Ice Fang at least once before going down, leaving me with only my Dragonair w/Dragon Rush. After like ten minutes of debating whether or not to try to finish it off with her, I just Max Revive'd Feraligatr instead and proceeded to take out it and Charizard in three moves. Now I just need to beat the Kanto section and I can go back to thinking up fun doubles teams. |
I just broke myself out of my comfort zone and used a team consisting of:
Ninetales Machamp Ninjask Feraligatr Dugtrio Wash Rotom to great effect in some Gym Leader rematches. ESPECIALLY against Blue. My Feraligatr is a BEAST. Swept his Rhyperior AND Tyranitar (with some prediction on the Rhyperior) DESPITE A FIFTEEN LEVEL DIFFERENCE. Finally fell to his Pidgeot, but to be fair... that fucker has Return. Managed to take him out in three turns between the Dugtrio and Ninetales. Everyone else was completely RUINED by Wash Rotom. Seriously, he's wicked broken. |
I just finished most of my level 50 team for upcoming local tourney. Looks like I am a Water Gym Leader at heart:
Milotic Pikachu Exeggutor Weezing (he's awful, probably going to release him) Vaporeon Umbreon Flareon Jolteon Cloyster Kingdra Starmie Hypno Magnezone and my heavyweight champion....Beedrill. I'll be using that pool for singles and doubles. Gonna be great times. |

I seriously need to get to work on the massive list of Pokemon I have yet to breed and raise. I've got at least fifteen that I haven't started, three that I just need to EV train (on that note, anyone have an easier way to EV train a Larvitar? Because there is no way I'm going to attempt Special Defense EV's by killing Tentacool with a Rock/Ground type). |
Slap a Power Band on the Larvitar, and switch it out at the start of battle for something that can take out the Tentacool in one shot.
|
Alternately, put a Power Band on it and grind pokemon that give you the other EV you need, killing two flying types with one rock type.
........Oh my god I just realized that's why flying types are weak against rock. |
Quote:
As for your suggestion, POS... that could work also, but I'd have to do the math for the other EVs separately on paper (I EV train on Diamond, Counter app is INVALUABLE.) |
It's only experience points that get divvied up after battle. Everyone who gets EXP also gets the full amount of effort points.
But yeah POS's idea is better. |
You absolutely sure? I really hate fucking up my EV's because it usually means I have to reset and DO ALL THAT OVER AGAIN! ARGH!
|
He's telling the truth, at least for Gen 4 (I know nothing about EV training in Gen 3). EVs are never divided, as it would otherwise cause issues with seperating a single EV (Like, say, Goldeen's 1 Attack EV) between six pokemon. Instead, everyone who gets experience gets the base EV amount (Plus anything from items like Macho Brace, Power Anklet, etc.).
|
A Pokemon with an EXP share should get the same amount of base EV points as if it had already participated in battle. It's not as efficient as using a Macho Brace or any of those Power weights, but there's less work involved.
Also, I do believe that Gen 4 uses the same EV system as in Gen 3. A minor tip: Keep your EVs exactly divisible by 4 so that you can allocate any remaining points to other stats. 252 EV is effectively the same as 255 EV. And farm lots of EV-reducing berries in case you mess up somewhere. |
Quote:
I'm working on the EV dump berries as we speak, but they take about a day to mature... good thing they drop five berries per plant or it would take forever. So if I did the Power Item/Swap for stronger mon strategy... Larvitar would still get the ten points from the kill? |

http://pokebeach.com/news/0510/pokem...ram-zekron.jpg Interesting that Black gets the White Pokeyman and viceversa. |
Dammit, I was going to buy Black but it seems White has the cooler looking pokemon.
|
Dammit. I want both... but I'll feel ripped off when Grey comes out.
|
I'm getting old. I think both of them look retarded. Same with Zoroark and the starters.
|
Take off those Nostalgia Goggles, buddy. They totally look super badass. Almost like they were ripped straight out of Monster Hunter TRI-
Oh. |
Oh don't get me wrong, none of what I've seen so far holds a candle to Red/Blue or the first gen pokemon. It's just that between the two, has that dumb "feathered dragon" look. Plus I can't tell if both have some crazy jet engine shove up their poke-holes.
|
It's not the nostalgia goggles, it's that I think they look stupid. I can't tell what the heck they are supposed to be. Edit: For the record, I thought Giratina looked badass, but these? Bleck.
|
Judging from their visible anatomy... I'd say dragons. Black one's probably Dragon/Dark. Anyone's guess as to what the white one is.
|
Quote:
|
I'd guess steel, but that was the type last gen for the legendaries, so yeah, light may be a possibility. I like it either way, both look fairly cool.
|
Well, given how much time is left until september, there is still enough time for a reveal on whether or not there's another type added. I'm pretty sure SOMETHING should have leaked by now on this, but then we haven't had any new types since GSC almost ten years ago.
|
They're both officially at least part Dragon. More importantly, Black and White will allegedly have ACTUAL differences.
|
The black one makes me think of Mewtwo in a suit of powered armor. That inhibitor suit Giovanni hooked him up with doesn't count
|

... And how the armor'd look. Thanks a lot. |
Not that this matters to many, but Latias has been banned to the Uber tier. Smogon front page, though I can't confirm WHY.
Salamence seems likely to follow, as Smogonites are currently playtesting the metagame without him to see if it's more balanced. Discussion is currently ocurring in this thread. I gotta say, I am a little disappointed. Latias was one of the few legendaries that was OU worthy that I could still use, though I didn't use it often. Though now that it's banned, a couple of the things it countered (like Breloom, for example) are now TOTALLY viable in OU. A few other things are also enjoying some much needed usage now that Salamence has been removed from the suspect ladder, though I'll be irritated if it DOES get the banhammer, as a few friends of mine play Smogon rules, and unless I asked for Ubers, Golondrina would not get any usage whatsoever. EDIT: apparently without Latias or Salamence, everyone's putting together stall teams. While I do enjoy stall teams, especially Hail stall, I can't say I'd enjoy having to constantly break through everyone in every match. |
Man, I still play Shoddy every now and then (An hour or two once or twice a week), and I gotta admit Latias didn't seem THAT bad (I hate Jirachi FAR more because parahax feels like you lost because your opponent got lucky, not because he outsmarted you). CM Latias is certainly tough to break without a good Dark type (Something OU really lacks outside Tyranitar, and which Latias is ready for most times), but UGH MORE HAIL STALL. Hail stall has been getting more common BEFORE this ban, I don't even want to look at Smogon right now T.T
|
Oh no, it's not hail stall that's seeing a comeback. It's regular stall and sandstall.
|
Every time I see 'tier' referring to characters in a video game I die a little more on the inside.
|
Whenever there are things that are not identical, there will be people who ponder just what the differences between those things mean in terms of usefulness. These people will invariably figure out just which of these things is better than the other things, and will rank them accordingly.
I don't see much point in complaining about it. |
You oversimplify it.
The truth of why it's done only makes for infinite sadness, a never ending horror of futility and desperation. |
He's saying they need to marinate the nether rod in the squish mitten.

I understand the competitive mindset, but being told you can't use your favorite characters is still annoying. |

Donomni hit the nail right on the head. I was disappointed myself by the fact that Latias was banned to Ubers. Hell, I'm disappointed some of my favorites aren't OU, but I can at least still use them in OU. Likewise, all of the Borderline stuff I use (i.e. Crobat) is banned from UU. Which I prefer to OU, were it not for the fact that I use Scizor in almost every team I run.
|
It's sad not because people are teling you how to play, it's sad because to get to this point, the point of tiers and shit, you honestly have to become obsessed with the game to the point where you're no longer actually having fun. It has become serious business. Pokemon. Fighting little cute critters in rockem' sockem' combat. They are so obsessed with it they have to calculate, weigh, categorize, tabulate, and effectively suck all the fucking fun out of the experience.
And that is sad and pathetic like... something i cannot even fathom. Quote:
Just... not give a fuck. Play the game in a way that is carefree and fun. If anyone complains or anything about what you use along the lines of "that's an uber, bluh bluh banned bluh bluh", punch them in the fucking balls and find a new friend. |
Wow, someone had a bad experience in their friend's basement!
|
Quote:

No, Mike, you're missing the point. Like, REALLY fucking hard. The reason I'm interested in tiers in pokemon? The reason I participate in stuff like Smogon? Because I thoroughly fucking enjoy the games. Do you seriously think I'd put so many hours into something I hate?
You've got some idea in your head that because I can look at a list of tiers and, god forbid, play with other people who have seen those tiers and agree to follow them with me, that I'm not enjoying the game anymore. Or fuck, even worse, you seem to think that because I enjoy the tiers in the game that somehow I'm out to fucking ruin the game for you. Because if you can't enjoy a game MY way, clearly you're doing it wrong. Actually, that last sentence seems to be the idea you're sharing; if I don't play how Mike motherfucking McC plays Pokemon, maybe I'm not a REAL fan of Pokemon. |
This reminds me of another Nintendo game...
No hold items, caterpie only, final destination. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-7gmds2njg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OccEKFdDq8 And yes! I can say that! Because the true purpose of Pokemon is... love, and how through the power of love you an become unto a god of destruction and lay waste to all those who stand before you. Love. Love will set you free. <3 |
Compettitive versus casual bulllshit again... yaaaaaaaaay
you're all dorks, you know? never forget that. NOW you're wasting time arguing about petty annoying, tedious shit instead of just playing the game. NOW you're getting all pissed about someone else's opinion about how you play the game. |
Quote:
Love. <3 |
I get that both sides of this "argument" need to suck a titty?
