LAN Halo

I'd like to announce that I'm going to my first 16-player Halo LAN party! I've been asked to bring my X-Box, and I'm all set.

My question is this: are there any veteran Halo players that could offer me any tips/tricks/glitches I could use?

AndyBloodredMage 05-09-2004 08:46 PM

If on Blood Gulch, get a sniper rifle and go into "halo tower." It's an incredibly cheap glitch, but its one you could use. Also, what do you enjoy doing, sniping or getting up close and personal?

Mr. Viewtiful 05-09-2004 08:52 PM

I'm the kind of guy that'll pop out of nowhere, pump about 30 assault rifle rounds into you, and then smack you with the butt of the rifle (whilst yelling "PIMP SMACK'D!"). That, and I like driving stuff.

However, I fill in any role nicely, including "teh sn1p3r," so tell me about this "Halo Tower" in Blood Gulch. It intrigues me... *evil laughter*

AndyBloodredMage 05-09-2004 09:02 PM

It's incredibly hard to explain online. Its a little crevice way up high, which is only get-to-able via ghost(the hovering thingie, i think its ghost.) Its a glitchy area where you can shoot almost anyone on the map, and they can't touch you. If you're with 15 other people, odds are someone will know what it is, and will likely be exploiting it.

Mr. Viewtiful 05-09-2004 09:05 PM

Wait...my friend Matt was talking about this...

It's like this ledge-type thing up behind one of the bases, right? I'll have to practice getting up there by Saturday...

AndyBloodredMage 05-09-2004 09:06 PM

It's not so much behind as it is to the side. It's really hard, I've only managed to get there once. Good luck in your endevour.

Well, its best not to go with the normal weapons, i.e. rifles, pistols, etc., but instead to go with the more inventive weapons, i.e. the warthog's bumper, or the front of the ghost (my favorite). Running over people is the cheapest, easiest way to kill people. In a place like sidewinder or bloodgulch, its easy, but you're friends will get a vendetta against you, and if you end up switching teams, get ready to get team killed alot.

Also, when you know you're about to die, go out with a bang. You'll probably be given one grenade when you spawn. Throw that grenade directly down on the ground when in close combat with someone and there isn't any way you can win. That way, you at least take someone with you.

Other than that, remember that the pistol can be used as a pretty decent sniper rife if you have good aim, and always take the path on the right with the flag when you're on bloodgulch. They always take the field, they never watch the proximity.

Hope I could help. I utterly suck at slayer, but when it comes to capture the flag, I'm one of the best... around these parts, at least.

The_Bear 05-09-2004 10:46 PM

The most important thing is not to be predictable. Never go to the same place or pick up the same gun more than 3 times in a row. My favorite weapon is the pistol. In Blood Gulch I like to hide around in the shadowing area by the opponents base and keep pumping out the kill until they find my place or I die, whichever comes first. Then I switch it up by taking either a warthog or ghost directly to theri base and play "cat at the mousehole" for a bit. It's also a bad idae to stay still, snipers will find you faster if you're an easy target.
It's usually a good idea to use rocks and caves for cover. Plan your route out, but don't be afraid to go out of your way to chase an enemy down. Finally, sniper bullets leave a trail for a reason.

AerodynamicHair: thanks for the tips. If you can give me more help, here's the settings I'm sure the host will put into effect:

Infinite grenades
Many MANY battles at Blood Gulch (Slayer and CTF, I predict)
All vehicles

Also, I'm not sure of the skill levels of the guests (I've never played them), but my main competition will be the host (I'll refer to him as 'Hobo').

Hobo LOVES to play on wide-open maps (in other words: Blood Gulch) where he can spam on his pistol all day. He also gets very annoyed when people take cover/run away from his rapid pistol use (hence playing Blood Gulch all the time; no cover). He also enjoys using the combination of Camo+Rocket Launcher for some instant kills.

Know of any ways to counter this? (running him over seems to work nicely, but I need mor than that)

I request that you, at some point while playing, get everyone to stop killing each other and start launching vehicles. Here's what I mean.

Set up the game so that everyone has infinite grenades and access to plasma grenades.
Make sure the warthog is in the level. The other vehicles aren't as amusing, trust me.
Get people to stand within throwing distance of the wheels/axles. Lob two grenades each at the wheels (I say two, as standing there longer usually means you blow up).
What should happen is that the first set of plasma grenades will carry the thing into the air.. in some direction, and then the second sit will keep it up there or spin it or launch it sideways..

You can also do this with dead bodies.

There are tons of things my friends and I do when playing that differ from actually playing the game. Some examples are: splitting the uprights on Battle Creek, "catching" a self-naded body with the rocket launcher, playing basketball in Blood Gulch with tanks and ghosts, pistol whips only, "Wartades!" (a game involving a driver and lots and lots of frag grenades), CarRocketEE (rockets and warthogs and nothing else... with teams)... Oh, man, that game can get ridiculous.

The_Bear 05-09-2004 11:19 PM

There's a game me and my friends like to play we call "warthog wars". It's set on FFA, and when the game starts, everyone tries to get into a warthog. When you get in a wathog, you head for the middle and ram into the other warthogs, attempting to flip them. Everyone who's not in a warthog heads for the middle and tries to get runover. If you run over someone that wasn't in a warthog, you have to die. The purpose is to tip over the other people's warthogs over and kill them, not the people without warthogs. If you are runover in a round where you didn't get a warthog, you get the warthog of the person that ran you over.

On sidewinder, if you go down the tunnel next to the bases, you'll find that cage-like barrier under which sits the over shield and active camo. If you park a ghost or warthog right next to it, you can get in from the other side and pass through the bars. Helpful for CTF returns.

AerodynamicHair 05-10-2004 09:47 AM

Well, if he really is a big wide open space guy, he's bound to pick both sidewinder and bloodgulch alot. At sidewinder, watch for a spot high up next to the bases that can be used to snipe people. He'll probably be pistol sniping most the time, so as long as you run around in a fairly hectic manner, he won't get you that well.

Once again, if he is a wide open space guy, that means he's going to stay in the field. So, always try to take a back route. Theres one on the right perimeter on bloodgulch and on sidewinder, and both give excellent cover. Experienced players might flood these ways too, but hopefully all the action will be happening on the field, and you can sneak around. Both these paths lead to the back of the enemy's base, at least if you're blue team (quick tip: blue team rules, they always have the best position). Well, you probably know these maps anyways, just don't forget their usefulness.

I haven't tried this, and it really is cheap if it works, but you could always go for the bunny technique. In other words, overuse the jump button. Some people think jumping up and down make you harder to hit, I don't know, I think its just stupid, but I'm just trying to think of all the tips I got.

In the end, just do what goes with what the rest of the team is doing. On a few off chances, like when everyone is in the middle of the field at blood gulch, grab another one of your guys and take a side path, or stay to one side of the perimeter. Good chances no one will catch you if all the action is going on in the field. Sorry that I can't be much help, I mostly just try to act on what I see. Don't always run for vehicles, they're easy targets and someone could kill you pretty easily when you're running for a ghost in the middle of the field. Otherwise, vehicular homicide, while very evil, has always been my favorite. Damn pedestrians.

Wish I had more info...

AndyBloodredMage 05-10-2004 02:21 PM

Since you'll be playing on Blood Gulch with full vehicles, I shall let you in on a little discovery I made. The 3 vehicles most easily coordinate to rock, paper, and scissors, where 1 can conquer another, will lose to another, and will tie to another (exception: tank v. tank.) Now Ghost=Paper Tank=Rock Warthog=Scissors. When a ghost attacks the tank, his plasma will slow down the tank, so the cannon cannot trace the ghost and shoot him, thus letting the ghost win. The tank can blow the crap outta the warthog, so the tank wins. Here is the interesting thing, when in a warthog, ram a ghost as hard as you can. Typically, it will spin in mid-air for awhile and land face-down, knocking out the driver. If you're quick, you can run over the bugger quickly enough.

synkr0nized 05-10-2004 04:47 PM

But warthogs can flip tanks.
And ghosts make the warthog's gunner just as useless as a tank turret.

I also recommend playing the level "Longest" with rocket launchers only. Add that to my list above.

The_Bear 05-10-2004 05:48 PM

If someone in a tank would let a warthog even get close, they're not very observant. Ghosts usually have the advantage against the warthog, except the gun will rip through it too fast for you to respond. Tanks are too slow and easily targetable. I preder to scout through the area on foot on the sides, taking out snipers along the way.

synkr0nized 05-10-2004 08:26 PM

He did say he was playing on a LAN. You can't look everywhere.
That, and, as I mentioned previously, I'm encouraging playing the video game but not actually playing the game. It leads to more fun, or at least can.

Mr. Viewtiful 05-10-2004 09:04 PM

Thanks for the tips, guys.

A few friends and I once tried to flip a warthog over one of the Blood Gulch bases, and it just ended up as a rocket launcher fragfest after a few minutes, since they'd keep "accidentally" shooting each other...still fun, tho.
