decompressing files
 

ok system was wiped and I forgot where I got my free decompressing program. anyone know of one for especially for .rar files?

7zip is the one I use, and therefore the best.

Unrar should do the trick. (I'm assuming you're using Windows, other operating systems have a package install for this.)

7-Zip is probably the best option on the market. It has superior compression and can decompress pretty much anything. It's also free.

The only thing I'm not sure of is if it can decompress things split into volumes.

well thankfully internet speeds are high enough that its rare to find things split into volumes.

so where do I go for 7-zip? I'd rather not accidently go to a virus embedded version

And what I meant has nothing to do with Internet. If you were using WinRAR, there would have been an option to split the things you were compressing into volumes, or separate parts of the same file. Doing this means you can store a large amount of data safely on discs or something without wasting any space, but it also means that some files might themselves be split apart, which doesn't lend itself to functionality. If you did this, you need to make sure you get software that treats all the compressed volumes as a single file like WinRAR does.

Yeah, but last I checked, that was US$50 a pop. ;)

I mean, yeah, to reactivate it, all he needs is his registration code, but he obviously doesn't have it anymore if he's asking about alternatives.

Edit: Or maybe he just had some unknown free program that compressed to .RAR format. I'm not sure I've ever heard of any that did other than WinRAR itself, so I can't exactly help him there.

While WinRAR would certainly like to you to purchase and activate it, it has never deactivated for me.
