Hey, People Who Cheat In Videogames

Holy fucking shit stop cheating at video games!

Now, it is widely known that human beings are competitive in nature. We want the best resources, we want the most advanced tools, we want to beat our neighbours. I understand that it's bred into us, the desire to win.

And hey, I totally understand it. At least part of it. Back in the day I was no-clipping through Quake walls, god-moding it up in Doom and had infinite ammo in Wolfenstein. But that was back in the day, when games were largely single-player, not multi-player.

I was recently enjoying a game of Team Fortress 2, where my team was close to winning, and I was rushing to my intelligence room with the intel (I was playing a Pyro) and I was immediately blown away by a turret. It's okay, it happens. Enemy Engies sometimes get into your intel room and set up shop.

The trouble was that I had set this Engineer aflame when I died, and when the game briefly showed the guy who killed me, I noticed two things. One, his health wasn't going down, even though he was on fire. Two, he suddenly started levitating, flying through the walls and back to his base in less than a second.

He then proceeded to to this from our base to his with the intelligence in quick succession, winning the game.

Now, it is one thing to die because someone is a better player than you. It's one thing to die when you do something stupid. Itis another thing entirely to die because some fuckwit doesn't have the courtesy to give you a fair game.

Hackers can go burn in an especially painful fire while being dragged around a salt desert by giant bee-spitting cats with laser vision.

Lost Planet 2 is particularly heinous about this. Aside from having weaponry which is so overpowered that they announced a patch to rebalance one gun (which had infinite ammo and homing and replaced the default machine gun), people feel the need to use some sort of device to purposefully lag their connections and blip all over the place. They'll blip at you, lob a grenade, and then blip away before you can even fire a shot, never mind that grenades can kill you quite easily. Rinse and repeat.

Personally, I wish there was a way to detect that and automatically ban people doing it. Or delete all their characters or special weaponry or something.

No.

Let's not get started on Diablo II. Okay, too late, I started it already. By now cheating is so common in that game that, in a sense of the word, you're even cheating when trading with others. Because there is a good chance whatever you're about to buy was acquired by using cheats, hacks and bots. And maybe it's a dupe, though that's most common with high runes. Blizzards anti-cheating measures mostly ban people who use an application that allows you to run Diablo II without a CD and multiple times (once for each CD Key you possess). To be fair it's used as a gateway for a good deal of hacks. Though, it still is like they arrest you for owning a kitchen knife because you COULD stab someone with it. Luckily that didn't happen to me, but to someone who used my CD-Key and got it permabanned.

And one time I got called a cheater in D2 because I didn't want to use a loophole to circumvent certain Level requirements in the game, good times.

And another time I got called a noob for actually playing the game instead of creating a character to be rushed to the final boss so I can power level myself up for bragging rights.

Why, yes, I did stop playing Diablo II.

Say's you! I must win every time, I MUST! Winning isn't everything, IT'S THE ONLY THING!

Cheating sucks, it's also the reason why sporting events have rules and refs. To try to prevent the cheating as much as possible. It still doesn't stop the players from doing it, either with fowls behind the refs, or blatant dives to draw a penalty. So video game isn't much different. All you can do Seil is report him and hope for the best.

Though I'll cheat in single player games, never multiplayer, defeats the purpose behind multiplayer, to challenge yourself against humans who actually think on their own.

God damn it I hate cheaters, may they be consumed by bees and lasers!

More importantly, it's one thing to win because what you did in the game beat what the other guy did in the game, but it's quite another to win by adding a "win" button to the game. What's even the point? Might as well just declare yourself the winner beforehand and not even play.

Because winning isn't what gets them off per se; ruining other peoples' day is.

I think that it's just that they want to play the game, 'cause it's fun, but they also want to win. They're not necessarily trying to be assholes (they are anyway) they see it is giving themselves an advantage.
