ROM drive isn't auto-running
not sure why, pop in a CD and it just displays the inside files. Normally this wouldn't bug me, but some of my games I cant get to run/install.

tweakin'
You could try downloading Microsoft's PowerToys' TweakUI app and look in the Autoplay section, where you can select which drives to enable it on, disable it on, and so forth. I know this has worked for people with autoplay issues. You can even decide to turn off autoplay.
Otherwise, you may need to check your registry for your autoplay/autorun settings in the following places: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\CDRom [general autorun] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\Explorer [if the autorun keys are set here, they will always overrule any changes made to the ones in the below location] HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer *edit: Not sure why these paths are showing up with spaces in them; I've typed none. Lastly, if by chance it's not all of your CDs/DVDs that fail to autorun/autoplay, it could just be some issue with that particular one. My copy of Star Wars: Rebellion wouldn't autorun and then install no matter what I did with it for some reason. for example. |

On the autorun thing, what probably happened was someone popped in a CD and clicked "Open Folder to View Files" with the "Always Perform This Action" box checked. Just go into Control Panel and find Autoplay. I run Vista, but it should also be there in XP. You can adjust your settings much more easily there than poking around in the registry. |
Make those disks your bitch.
Oh. My window is too wide for that to be an issue, so it looked odd to me.
Also, what you suggest is certainly a good call if it's just music or a movie or data. But if it's something like a game disk meant to launch an installer or the like, then autoplay isn't the issue and he may still need to tweak his autorun settings. Regardless, I should have suggested to check those settings first. |
just did, and it was set to prompt me for all forms (there was no option for games or installation discs). I was gonna try Synk's original suggestion, but I have no idea what HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE is, I tried entering it directly in, but that didn't work

I'm going to let someone else walk you through messing with that. Edit: Before you do, did you happen to see a "mixed content" section? That might cover it. Vista has one for "software and games," but if XP doesn't, it's likely under something vaguely related or a catch-all. |

That's... really weird. There's no option to just run the thing when it comes up? You're sure there's no game section in the Control Panel area? :sweatdrop
