So I was all like, what the monkey is a planewave. So I wikipedia it and got this picture

then my eyes hurt from all the pretty lights, but I still came back not understanding what a planewave is.

It's a wave made up of planes obviously.
Alternatively it's a way of dealing with electrons that is easier than dealin with their functions explicitily.
