Who Are You Remembering Today?

Whether it's a grandfather or uncle that died way back when, or someone who was more recently lost overseas, Remembrance Day asks us to give a moment to think of them and their sacrifices.

I'm thinking of me grand-dad, who died before I was born.

So to all of you who have lost someone, you've got my sympathies. To all of you stationed in Iraq, whether training or coming home: thank-you.

The last sound I ever heard was an explosion
And bodies flew like apples thrown by boys play
When I could see again, I was alone Jimmy wasn't there
And a crater marked the hillside where he'd lain
And Billy Whitefish from Kenora wound up in a German trench
Where he captured their machine gun all alone
And held them off until his ammunition was all spent
And they swarmed around and they hacked him to the bone

On a personal note, my mom's father was in the Green Berets and did service in Korea and Vietnam, and my father was an intelligence officer in the Air Force working at the Pentagon during Desert Storm.

On a general note, anyone currently serving in the Middle East, anyone who has served there recently, and their friends and relatives have my thanks. The politics behind the war may be a total clusterfuck, but I can't fault the servicemen and women themselves.

Thank you.
