Yu-Gi-Oh! - Japanese marketing at work

I need to rant on this. Only the Japs could think of this. They make a show about a card game. Then they make a card game about the show about the card game. Then they make a series of Video Games based on the card game based on the show based on a card game. This could only be thought of in the same country that they have musical cross-walks.
As if Nintendo's "Gotta Catch em' All" Brainwashing wasn't bad enough...

Oh no...shall I make an American Parallel?

All I have to say is, MORE POWR TO KONAMI! WOOHOO! I don't like Yu-Gi-Oh but hey, it get's Konami Money!

Katana 11-25-2003 12:44 AM

Humor me. Make a American paralell.

Kenryoku_Maxis 11-25-2003 01:17 AM

In America, we have more ways to sue people than all the other countries in this world combined. Heh, not exactly a paralell but that's what came to mind when you said your first thing.

A good paralell....uh. Disney makes some animated movies with princesses in them. Then they make a bunch of marketing items for people to buy in a 'Princess' Set. Then down the line the company decides to make a game about all the princesses in Disney films. Then they make a spin off movie off the same idea as the game. Repeat. Not cards, but same marketing cycle.

Other American companies do things similar with marketing. All Star Wars would have to do is make a show off their CCG and it would be the exact same thing as Yu-Gi-Oh.

It's not quite the same. The thing with Yu-Gi-Oh! is that they took the norm, and ran with it in reverse.

Kenryoku_Maxis 11-25-2003 02:02 AM

Yeah, I sappose. Still, its daft cleaver of them. -_-

Katana 11-25-2003 02:17 AM

I know. Shame I didn't think of it first. The shows ok, I guess. Sort of a whole drama-suspense thing I haven't seen sense the Cell saga on DBZ....

The card game isn't bad either. It reminds me of Magic, without mana, and with cards you play facedown.

Bleh, I can't stand the show.
Yugi: "You kidnapped my grandpa!"
Pegasus: "And you'll never get him back!"
Yugi: "Oh yah!? I'll beat you at cards!"

And the duels... to quote "The Villain" of insanityink.com:

Yu-gi-oh, however, I will comment on. Initially I thought it was just a pointless combination of Pokemon and Card Captors. There's our bifurcated hero, Yugi, somehow the greatest player in the popular card game Duel Monsters (winner of the most coma-inducing name ever). There's his grandfather, stolen by the bad guy (called The Golden Eyeball, or something), inventor of Duel Monsters. And you get a plucky crew of adventurers based on the FF7 mold, helping Yugi in his quest to save his grandfather, figure out his mystery Millennium puzzle, and probably do something nasty to Mr. Eyeball. I'm bored just reading my own description.

But when you really watch the show, it turns out that it revolves around the card game more than Pokemon revolved around its big draw (the questionible sexual orientation of Brock). Yugi goes up against these smirking, harshly angular opponents and beats the living crap out of them using just a deck of cards. They pull out a Blue Eyes White Dragon and have it attack Yugi's Ham Sandwich of Terror, or whatever, and Yugi says in this dramatic voice, "That may be, but I have Eyes of Lightning in play, reducing the damage of your Blue Eyes White Dragon (they never shorten the monster names) by half. I'm also going to play the Deadly Pork card in attack mode, giving my Ham Sandwich of Terror fifteen times its attack power. And if my luck is strong, then you've also just wet your pants."

Why must people think every Anime with cards is automatically 'like CardCaptor Sakura'.....oh well.

Which brings up a point I have to say. I think CardCaptor Sakura is a very original show but going away from that onto the point I'm gonna make. Like it or not, isn't Pokemon a VERY original concept? I think it is. Never seen anything like it before....and its spawned a ton of spin off shows since.

Krylo 11-25-2003 04:30 AM

Yah... they both are rather original. I've seen some Card Captor, and it's really nothing like Yugioh... and it's also spawned more underage hentai than any series I know of. But that's totally off subject.
