I just wish we'd take a hard swing left, personally.

Kim 12-10-2010 09:41 PM

I am kinda curious what would be bad about that, seeing as people want to go down the middle road of playing nicely. Seriously, what's bad about going far left? We could repeal DADT, DOMA, legalize same sex marriage, get in some decent healthcare for the poor, some decent monetary help for the poor, pass the paycheck fairness act, and tax the fuck out of rich people. I see nothing wrong with any of this.

shiney 12-10-2010 09:43 PM

You also aren't rich and therefore don't have the entire government working for you.

Kim 12-10-2010 09:46 PM

Well, yes, rich people wouldn't like it, but I'm talking about the people who aren't rich but still argue in favor of the middle road. I really don't get why they're supposedly opposed to a hard swing to the left.

shiney 12-10-2010 09:54 PM

They've been told by the best echo chamber in the world that it's bad, have been instructed that support of it is unamerican and socialist (as if this in itself is a bad thing), are a generation of me first and screw yous, and are too dumb and/or mute to think for themselves and rely on pundits to do it for them. The opposition is super loud and the support, while massive, is unheard.

Kim 12-10-2010 09:57 PM

Well, yeah, but I was kinda hoping that someone in favor of centrism/moderatism would try and offer an explanation so I could either:

A. Finally get why they did even if I disagreed

or

B. Point out everything wrong with their argument

Well, I suppose it could possibly have something to do with either supporting parts of both platforms or not fully supporting either platform. Like being in support of both gun rights and abortion rights or being in support of neither and not wanting either side to win, instead picking and choosing. Though that sounds like a good motivation for another political party.

Because for the vast majority of the people in this country, The Center (and to a certain degree, the Right as well) doesn't fuck with the way they live their lives. A hard swing to the left would cause some amount of chaos and change. Plus, most people associate left-wing ideals to the bullshit in San Francisco such as banning toys in Happy Meals and other inanities.

You're also neglecting to mention that from the years of 1945 until 1990 the United States government and media repeatedly said, in every way possible, that anything "left" of them was letting the communists win which fundamentally undermined everything that they held dear. As it stands right now, the US is pretty much run by two generations. 1) People who were told for 40 years about the evils of communism and socialism, and 2) People who were raised by the people told for 40 years about the evils and communism and socialism. That kind of social engineering doesn't go "poof" just because the Cold War is over.

I think my main problem is that I don't see any of that as "moderate" or "centrist". It's still rightist. The status quo is what conservatives are all about.
