History Made Fun!

I'm sure we all hate to be forced to learn something. But every so often, something fun comes along that teaches us something from history, and does so in a subtle manner. Here's some of my examples.

Brave Fencer Musashi - A video game that ties in to the legend of the great samurai Musashi and his arch-nemesis, Kojiro, and Muashi's teachings of the Five Rings.
Einhänder - According to a plot analysis at GameFAQs, this video game contains much Greek mythology about Endymion, the lover of Selene, and some other Greek. Also, Biblical references contained within the form of Sodom.
Read or Die - An anime with a huge history overdose. Famous historical figures are cloned and given super-powers related for what they were most-known for(Beethoven being able to create a song of death, anyone?).
The Matrix - Supposedly it's based on the Bible, but I've still got my doubts.

So, what other fictional pieces ou there give historical references is a subtle way? Subtle meaning that the pieces isn't focused around that specific thing(E.G. "Braveheart," "The Patriot," "Saving Private Ryan," etc. because those are blatant histroical references)?

Well, off the top of my head, the FF games always reference the Mursame/Muramasa (I'm somewhat sure those are the right names) myth.

... And as we all know, Conker's Bad Fur Day was an extended commentary on Stalinist Communism.

I know that the matrix is the most philisophical movie ever made. there is some other movie that had something to do with that but i cant remember.

hmmm intresting i'll have to think on this one a little more. But i do belive that the Matrix is based off the bible.(i do have some doubts though)

its like neo is jesus but thats really all i can get.

Neo is Jesus if Jesus was known as a really bad actor... other wise, the whole thing kinda falls apart.

Anyway... Trigun does a better bible parallel than the matrix, if we're going to include that in the 'History Made Fun!' scenario.

One of my teachers claims that LOTR had loads of Biblical references in it, and I think she was saying that Gandalf is supposed to be Jesus, but I thought the people who wrote the bible didn't like wizards? Doesn't make sense, but it could just be they didn't think it out enough.

Dude, that whole 'Sermon on the Mount' was totally overplayed.

And that line about "let this cup pass over me"? Didn't feel it at all.

Where did that find that guy, wandering around in a desert or something?

I heard he was a CARPENTER! Rediculous! Get him when you wanna build an ark or something!

I learned all I know about scurvy from Illusion of Gaia.

Matrix had many more religeous and theological references in it then just Christianity. There is even a mensa level course on analyzing the movie if you want to ruin it for yourselves by picking it apart and finding it all.
