I just formatted my laptop and did a clean install of Win7 so, the gadgets should work in your PC :/. Maybe the gadget thingy was removed from startup. Get a program that has a utility that can manage your startup programs (this one's free) and see if sidebar.exe is disabled or missing.

Contrary to appearance I am a digital litterbug, the only thing about this is that I have everything either crammed into a toolbar or the home folder.

Also Ubuntu is for awesome people, I don't need to stare at my toolbars all the time, because I can make them appear at my command.

I'd get up a screenshot of my Windows XP boot, but it's mostly a clutter of pre-installed stuff since I only use it for DDO and (soon enough) Minecraft.

Two more.

Eh, Ubuntu is okay. I got tired of it. It has a lot of good points, but the compatability issues mean a lot of fucking around if you're into lots of unsupported stuff.

Windows has been able to do this forever.

Anyway, every OS sucks.

But the Ouroboros seal is pretty great, too.
