I now have a new goal in Minecraft

Pip Boy 02-19-2011 12:08 AM

I am totally in support of this. If you need cobblestone, let me know and I'll donate what I can.

EDIT: Me and the mysterious Balt creature have begun preparations for an underwater city. It will be amazing.

err you do know I kind of already got the start of one right?

Aldurin 02-19-2011 12:30 PM

Holy shit why so many underwater cities? Now I gotta finish mine.

EDIT: This may be a glitch of the HD texture pack, but ghasts don't make any noise and don't create visible projectiles, you just see a ghast and then hear and explosion nearby a moment later. It's kinda hard to play boom-pong when you can't see the ball.

Okay, so what's the make-this-a-portal command? Like, I know all the rest, but I do not recall that one.

Edit: Sorry, actually what I need to know is how to set my coordinates.

QUICK TUTORIAL ON THE CREATION AND MANIPULATION OF PORTALS
(Mostly copied from the plugin's homepage)

{Required} (Optional)

/mvpc {Portal Name} (Portal Destination) - Creates a portal
/mvps {Portal Name} - Selects a portal that has been created. Necessary for modification of preexisting portals.
/mvpd {Portal Name} - Sets the destination for the currently selected portal. You can only modify destinations of your own portals.

/mvlist - Lists all worlds. Meant to be accessible to everyone, but currently broken.
/mvpr {Portal Name} - Deletes a portal. This command is accessible only by Fifthfiend and BitVyper at this time.
/mvplist - Lists the names of all portals on the server. This command is accessible only by Fifthfiend and BitVyper at this time.

All About Making Portals with /mvpc and similar commands. Read this before trying to make portals or if you're having problems with making them work.Remember C for Create. This one works by using a wood pick (the default selection wand for the plugin) to select two blocks that will function as the corner for a cube, line, or if they're the same block, a single block. The selected blocks will be turned into a portal with {Portal Name} when the command is used. You can use (Portal Destination) to set your portal's destination, or leave it blank if you want to use {Portal Name} as the destination for another portal (for a one way portal).

When making a new portal:

-Be careful where you place it. You cannot put two portals in the same place, so a misplaced portal can make it difficult to try again and make a correct one. As of now, only Fifthfiend can successfully delete portals.

-Record the name of your portal. This is very important, as knowing the name of your portal is the only way to connect it to anything or connect anything to it. Forgetting it can be troublesome, because there is currently no command available to general users that will show a list of portals that have been created (reason being that it prevents other people from setting their destination as one of my portals and getting into my stuff/griefing me with it).

-Important: to prevent portal based griefing/mischief, it is currently required that all portals be obviously marked and identified. Stray portals will be deleted. The best way to identify them is by making a Nether Portal* or columns of some material that do not match their surroundings and a sign attached identifying the portal and/or its location. Those of us who are more secure that nobody is going to try and grief us can put the name of the portal on our portal to make it easier to identify them later.

-When making a destination portal, be careful where you place it. If I make "Portal1" in a nether gate that goes to "Portal 2", also a nether gate, then connect 2 to 1 to make a two-way portal link, there may be some unexpected results. Namely: When a portal's destination is full (Contains anything other than air), the portal will deposit you at the first empty place directly above it. Since the purple portal matter that fills a nether portal is not air, this can cause errors when using a nether portal as the destination for your portals. The best solutions I have found are to A) Make the portal extend a bit in front of the nether gate, providing an empty place to desposit you safer to where you want to be (unfortunately also causing occasional accidental teleportation by people near but not in the gate) or B) Do not turn on your nether gate. This works perfectly, but could make it a little less clear that there is a portal there, and if someone comes by and lights it you'll be back to having problems with it again.

-When assigning a portal a destination with the (Portal Destination) part of the command, you have to designate the type of location it is connecting to. There are two kinds of destinations: Worlds, which will go that worlds spawn, made by "w:worldname" and portals, going to any specific named portal in any world in the multiverse, made by "p:portalname". Oftentimes when people are having trouble connecting their portals, it is because they've forgotten to use the destination descriptor, as it is mandatory.

-All names must be exact. This means case sensitive. A portal to Arcanos will always fail, because the correct name of the world is ARCANOS.

To provide an example: I want to create a portal from one nether gate "Gate1" to another nether gate "Gate2". I will highlight the area within the first portal by right clicking one block inside it and then left clicking another with a wooden pick, arranged as if they were opposite corners of a square or cube. I will now type "/mvpc Gate1". It should inform me that I have created a portal without a destination. Now, I will create gate 2 the same way, but add a destination (gate1). "/mvpc Gate2 p:Gate1". I have successfully created a one-way connection between two gates. Now, I want to set Gate2 as a destination for Gate1. I will start by selecting Gate1 with "/mvps Gate1". Now that I have it selected, I will change its destination. "/mvpd p:Gate2".

If anyone is having any difficulty getting their portals up and working, feel free to contact me in game or ask questions here in the forums.

Alright, found out that 3ds files can be opened and viewed in 3DsMax. Why this wasn't obvious to me from the start is a testament to just how tiny and reptilian my brain actually is. In any case, I'm currently borrowing one of the computers down in the university commons, and construction resumes on Project BFD.

Why not make a thick gate? IE built one gate, ignite it, and then build a second gate in front of it, but don't ignite the second gate. Link the portal to the second gate, and then you have an obvious gate that's turned on, but no accidental 'porting.

Dunno if it'll work that way. But perhaps a "room" with the portal in it might help? That way the only way one gets ported is if they actually go into the room the portal is in?
