Holy fucking shit this show. It's got a unique, gorgeous art style. It's pacing blows the shit out of that of every other magical girl anime ever. The writing and twists go "FUCK YOU" to all your expectations of the genre. I mean, seriously, this is fucking awesome. Not to mention the art style in reality marbles where everything looks like it's made of random clips of art. The fight scenes are amazing, too. In fact, my only real complaint thus far is that there's some pointless fanservice in the OP.

Favorite parts (spoilers up to episode 8): Mami dying, because ho-shits she got her head bitten off. The soul gems thing because that's kind of a "Well... fuck" revelation for all the characters. Kyubei being shot and later being revealed to be a villain. Sayaka turning into a witch.

Seriously, you fucks, watch this goddamn show. This is SHAFT at its finest tearing apart an entire genre and doing it right.

Except all I have to say about it is at the same level as what I have to say about Bleach, which isn't much. This was a good episode, though; number eight. Homura made me go, "Holy crap!" twice ( when she spawned grenades and when she SHOT KYUBEY IN THE FACE ). So, that was nice. I hadn't done that since episode three.

Oh, also, this jank got me to read a translation of Goethe's Faust. It's a neat play. I could read Faust and Mephistopheles bickering all day.

No no no, he's a mahou shoujo, since he's a magical girl. Masou is just a portmanteau of mahou and something that I don't know which means clothed.

That's a bit of a bunk comparison, to be honest. But really I think it depends on what you hated Evangelion for.
Just watch a few, see what happens.

Well, I hated Evangelion for its shit pacing and awful ending. Madoka definitely feels slower paced, but it uses that to develop its characters instead of sitting on a single frame for five minutes cuz the animation budget ran out. But yeah, it's Eva in that it completely tears apart the genre and takes it in a whole different direction, but I like the direction Madoka is going, whereas Eva seemed to get lost.

Without offering too many spoilers, I will say that the spoiler you mention is not especially graphic as you might think, and that there haven't been any other instances of *that* happening since. However, there have been other REAL BAD THINGS that have happened, but they're a different kind of REAL BAD.

Not only are they unable to save Sayaka, but ANOTHER character dies, and Kyubei continues to be the evilest motherfucker in the whole show.

This Witch's Labyrinth kicked all the ass though.

So, like Sayaka's labyrinth was made of music and train tracks. Music's a given, what with her wish and all, but why the tracks? It's 'cause the labyrinth is a mixture of the former magical girl's wish and the murder that turned her into a witch. Gertrude's scissors? You better believe she cut somebody. Elly made one last trip out of her room to murder somebody at an amusement park. You can see why this is fun, yes?

What do you have me watching?

This show is quite literally the deconstruction of the magical girl that TTGL was for the mecha genre.

Where your normal magical girl anime is bright and happy and cute, all of the things that are bright and happy and cute are tinged with malice and darkness. It's like watching a show about the uncanny valley. Everything seems... off somehow.

I dunno, TTGL had a few dark moments, but even at its very worst, the most morbid moments were quickly overshadowed by PURE HARDCORE OVER-THE-TOP BADASSERY. Mahou Shouja Madoka Magica feels more like it wears a cute face, but there is a horrible looming dark right around the corner. Like Clamp meets Evangelion/Lovecraft.

I'd be lying if I said those Labyrinth sequences didn't have just a tiny bit of that Cthulhu Fhtagn feeling to them.

So just due to the sheer what-the-fuckery in this thread, I decided I'd give this show a shot.

...what. The. Fuck.

Seriously. I don't think I've seen something go from cute and bubbly to depressing as all hell so well. Love all of its qualities, but it's just so damn depressing... Especially at these recent episodes.

Holy fuck wow at the latest ep. Really, really emotionally powerful, and also a cool way to explain a lot of things. Also dig all the witches we see.

I like how, while the premise of this episode has been known randomly-mass-guessed since episode one, the particulars made it still engaging and entertaining.

Those particulars being Homura's adorable "glasses and braids" look, the explanation of her arsenal (and its humble beginnings as a 3-Wood), making bombs with instructions from the internet, Mami's 'Nam moment after they kill Octavia, and all the awesome witches and familiars. Or, basically, everything from frame one until they rolled the opening as the ending.

I can't beleive there's only 2 episodes left. I'm trying to figure out how the hell can they wrap this up in that time.

Also, I particularily liked the way Homura alluded to this being Madoka's maze as if she were already a witch at the end of the episode.

Well, considering how they've been unable to defeat the Walpurgis Night without getting Madoka into a contract, its a serious possibility she'll have to have Madoka defeat the Walpurgis and then kill her to prevent her transformation. Indicating that this may be Madoka's Maze in the sense that killing Madoka may be the only real way out.

ALSO I WAS RIGHT ABOUT THAT FUCKING CAT THING. Even from Episode 3 that seemed completely straight fucked up, then I go and catch up with the series and it just goes bananas.

This has been my background since shortly after episode three aired. It's the closest I've had to a classy background in a long time.

Episodes are postponed until further notice. Episode 10 won't have its Niconico rebroadcast. Bluray one is postponed similarly.

Nothing has been canceled, though, and the series writer implied that work continues on the last two episodes. The issue is mostly waiting for timeslots to open back up on TV.

Yeah, it sounds like it's been postponed due to the events in Japan, so yeah, can't really blame them.

So apperently, the last two episodes of this will be airing on April 21st.

This is a thing which is true and I've been silently squealing since Friday or so when I found out.

That was the best ending ever. Homura's effort paid off. I have all kinds of parallels to draw to other works, but I'll save it.

No word whatsoever. So you'll either be waiting a WHILE or can just watch it with subtitles.
