Parasite Eve

Well since 3rd Birthday is coming out soon I decided to play through the first two Parasite Eve games to reacquaint myself with Aya and her misadventures in monster hunting.

Wow, I still can't believe how much each game is different. I can't think of another series that skips genres with each new game.

The first was a very cinematic RPG that used its very impressive visuals to build suspense. The opera scene and the horse bursting into flame and the ensuing battle on the carriage come to mind as examples.

The second was a very action oriented Survival Horror game, it really reminds me of a kind of primitive Resident Evil 4.

3rd Birthday is a 3rd person shooter. Now I don't mind the genre jump, because I honestly expected something like that to happen. I have seen the game-play and some of the cinematics and I really want to know what happens in the game. The only thing I am worried about is the fact that I have been told they pull an Other M on Aya. Regardless, I am glad to see another Parasite Eve game coming out.

Anyone else as excited as I am for the release? Or maybe you want to talk about theolder titles, cause I am all for that as well.

Also, you should go and buy Parasite Eve on the PSN so they bring out Parasite Eve 2. ;)

I've already spoiled myself by checking the whole story of 3rd Birthday, including the ending.. so i can tell you right now. it IS leaps and bonds better than Other M. The story is not any huge epic, but it's fairly decent for what i saw.

It's not hard to be leaps and bounds better than Other M's story. Any given episode of Heartcatch Precure is leaps and bounds better than Other M's story. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers' story is leaps and bounds better than Other M's story.

Main thing is that infamous shower scene in PE3. The story in 2 kind of took from Dino Crisis (Capcom) with some crazy assed "Wait, what?" moments when you get into the mitochondrial backstory.

Kind of makes sense that no one's read the books so the second and possibly the third aren't really as coherent as the first game.

Well, the backpoint is that both games try to speak of Motherhood and explore the Feminine side of the characters. 3rd Birthday seems like a clear Squeenix game on storytelling, but i did find that it tells it's story better

Has there really been a good game that explores femininity?

Heavenly Sword was short.
Other M...

Eve1 is borderline.
Then they go and screw it up with 3.
FFX was great...
Then X-2 turned it all to crap.

I've yet to see any good stories that explore females without giving in to either fan service or sexploitation (TR, is iffy but I have yet to really get into the games so...)

I'd hazard that Ultimate Virginal Doormat Who'd Marry A Monster For Public Happiness Yuna is worlds more damaging than Free-Thinking Girl In Short Shorts Yuna.

She got better. FFX-2 took it in a wholly different direction than I believe her characterization was warranted in what... 1 year?

PyrosNine 03-21-2011 06:35 AM

She spent a year....with Rikku. All that "shit I'm not gonna die now what the fuck do I do with my life?" and "shit my true love interest was a hologram!" stood no chance against Rikku's boundless optimism and her even shorter short shorts.

If Sephiroth spent a week with Rikku and her poor taste in warm clothing, he'd have been like: Jenova wat?

And then X-2 would have just been team YRS, Yuna, Rikku, and Sephiroth wearing Paine's outfit.

But Parasite Eve 3rd birthday looks cool, if only because I can't see how it's connected to 2 or 1 in any way other than the main character, and the whole "male fullbody armor soldier suddenly becomes Aya Brea in an undershirt."

And the shower scene.

And the Lightning costume.

As long as it doesn't have a young woman transform into hairless, cancerous bipedal raptor thing in a cutscene, looks good.
