Oh man just read that Wiki article- how can you leave out the biggest controversy of all- ie that Herge was a nazi collaborator, was publishing Tintin in a occupation friendly magazine and his scripts for whaever reason were deemed suitable nazi propagana. In this time you got stuff like the Shooting Star where Tintin is saved from the evil americans by the brave crew of Italians and Germans. He got out of trouble somewhat later by publishing Secret of the Unicorn and its sequel near the end of the war- these were pretty much straight adventure storys though ith somewhat of an aristocratic bent. He got arrested for it and banned from newspaper work for a long time.

I find it more likely he was trying to get with what seemed to be the winning side, and to do that he had to draw some distasteful things. Only have the wiki article to go by, though.

I'm looking foward to seeing this in theaters when it comes out in December. I grew up reading Tintin (in French) and I've watched a few episodes of the series in English whenever I had the chance. I always found it weird when he called his dog "Snowy", being so used to "Milou", but I guess Milou doesn't sound that good in English :/

I'm also glad that Spielberg chose the "Unicorn" story ark, which was one of my favorites to read, the other being "Les 7 Boules de Crystal" and "Le Temple du Soleil".

I'm not familiar with any english language version of Tintin, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to roll with this particular adaptation. Especially because of the name translations. I know Captain Haddock probably doesn't count as very subtle theme naming, but Professor Calculus is at least one level more blatant. I guess I feel that more theme naming doesn't necessarily work too well with the tone of the series.

For the badness of name translations there's probably nothing that can beat the french version of Harry Potter, though.

Professor Calculus...I forgot about that. It just feels so weird, but I guess Professor Sunflower (Tournesol) sounded too uh...frou-frou, in a way? I think I might just go listen to the French version in theaters (since I can, because of the whole living in Québec thing...I mean, why wouldn't I?) Hopefully the voice-overs will be good; I don't usually go see films in French, but for this I'll do an exception.
