Rather ironically considering my current avatar, my least played is Medic. The servers I go on usually don't suffer from Medic shortages - and when they do, the team is in dire straits in every other regard already. 4spy 4sniper rush!

The best thing to do as an engie is experiment. The worst kind of engie is the one that puts a sentry/teleport where no one expects it This works ESPECIALLY well for minisentries if of course your backing it up. On attack/defense maps I suggest trying to sentry jump to high up locations to place teles before the round starts a tele in a high up spot is great for surprise attacks just be sure to inform you team to not attract attention to where it is specifically. also Putting a dispenser in a high (teammate) traffic area helps your team and keeps you crit rate up. Also Don't be afraid of using the wrangler if need be just be sure that it's the right choice to do so.

Oh good lord, I hate that (Spy Rushes).
But I tend to use Medic a lot, because my servers tend to be wanting for Medics a lot. However, I do so enjoy playing Medic at times. What's that, enemy team? You want this Soldier to stop blowing dudes apart? Too bad. Oh no, my dudes are on fire. If only I had a way to put that out. Oh, and today, I tried to save a Sentry by tripping a solo Ubercharge and standing in front of an Ubered enemy Heavy. It didn't quite work, but I'm sure it could. I still don't get how you can manage to Senty Jump during setup. I can barely get a pair of Teleports deployed by the time the round starts, let alone build a level 3, rocket jump, and rebuild. |
That's the thing, you don't use a level 3. You have to use a level 1's bullets, but at the same time you have to avoid killing yourself but still get enough force to clear the roof you're trying to access. And hold a direction at the right time so you land on the roof. Takes practise, and if you're not up before the round starts you may as well cut your losses and forget it.
You need to pick up metal though before jumping, especially if you want a full nest up there. It takes a long time to set up. For instance, on Gorge RED engies will occasionally use that to set up at the second spawn door for -BLU- engies, which provides decent cover while covering the point, but RED HAS to be able to fend off BLU for a few minutes before they start attacking the point directly. In addition, if you don't molest savvy Demos doing a few charged-stickies towards the buildings, it's doomed. Granted, if 2 other engies set up at the sides there, it's going to take a ton of Uberage to punch through. But usually, I don't bother with jump nests. Demos on my servers are smart. ;) |
So, today I played on freight, which I really like but never find maps. I went medic, it was a 8v8.
By the end of a few rounds, I was second in my team with 81 points ( first guy was at 97, a heavy I kept ubering ). Everyone else in the game had less than 43 points. I had 4 dominations. I was just annoyed at how at one point a spy backstabbed the guy I was healing, turned around, I switched to my saw...And he backstabbed me in the face. |

Today I discovered another stupid engie trick. I saw it happen the other day and wanted to try it out. As it turns out, on Doublecross? If you construct a dispenser just at the top of the stairway outside of the sniper's battlements, you can crouch jump onto the roof behind said battlements. The entire area up there is constructable, so slap down a teleporter exit while you're there. Then demolish your dispenser and scurry back to the base and pray the enemy doesn't find out what you've done.
There is one major flaw with this strategy, though. Doublecross is a huge outdoor area, meaning your nest covers only about a third of the territory and can be easily sniped from your own battlements. Likewise, Demomen standing on the battlements can easily destroy your buildings without fear of reprisal unless you have one or two dedicated guards. And since it's a stupid engie trick* meant to completely shut down the enemy, they WILL concentrate on destroying it, so... yeah. *Like a stupid dwarf trick, but with more boolets. But it's fun as hell to pull it off. |
The best part is when a second engie joins you and starts taking potshots with the Wrangler to keep the whole bridge clear. Also making sure that others use your teleporter helps suppress counterattacks since demo is gonna find trouble spamming when a heavy drops down from the roof and starts shooting at him (this is one of the bigger problems to removing one of these nests, since to get a clear shot you have to turn your back to the enemy base, and are under constant invasion from the battlements.

In regards to matches that have 3 snipers/spies/too many of the wrong class combinations: Burn this into your mind. BURN IT.

I just unboxed a Strange Bonesaw. Anybody want it? It's a giveaway, first come first serve, but if you have an extra of something cool (Solemn Vow, Diamondback, or another medic-series crate, for example) I'd love to trade instead.
