"Dead Island Focuses More On Surviving Than Shooting" or "Yeah, Dead Island Again"

So the first YouTube ad that got me interested in something ever. Neat. Anyways, after forgetting all that jazz that was in that thread posted by Jagos (Yay-gos or Jay-gos?) a while back, I looked into it again.

And I'm still not really sold. Looks more like Dead Rising (which I didn't like) than L4D. (Which I play almost daily.) How 'bout you guys?

Azisien 07-26-2011 04:41 PM

I love Dead Rising and L4D both and if Dead Island pulls off a well polished hybrid, I'm sold.

I never got the hype over the original trailer. I mean for a start it was a purely pre-rendered cutscene, which we all know are never anything like what the game is going to be like and is the reason why I never trust any game that doesn't show me actual in game footage ever. The fact that it seemed to be just another zombie game was also uninteresting to me too (oh yay, more bloody zombies, because we've never seen those in a game before right?).

Then a short while after that trailer the developers came out and said they were genuinely surprised at the reactions they'd had because apparantly the game wasn't gong to be anything like what the trailer was showing anyway, which raised yet anohter eyebrow for me and basically confirmed for me that they'd designed the entire thing purely to draw some sort of emotional attention to what was going to possibly be a very shallow game.

And then they went and likened it to Borderlands crossed with Dead Rising, which confirmed that they'd been bullshitting us the whole time.

Oh and then we saw the actual gameplay footage and it looked medicore at best.

And WTF is with that logo? How is that dude hanging from a fucking palm leaf? There is like no support in that leaf what so ever man!

The original trailer was less gory than a horror movie. I was surprised at the outrage.

The Artist Formerly Known as Hawk 07-26-2011 05:41 PM

There was outrage? I thought people were commending it and holding it up as a combination of viable proof as videogames for art and proof of the second coming of the fucking messiah? Either way it was vastly overated.

Bells 07-26-2011 06:15 PM

the outrage was entirely about the Dead little girl. c'mon...

I dunno, "more about surviving"? Really? I would like to see a game where you are placed at a constant disadvantage and must be resourceful to survive, but if it's just "Dead Rising Multiplayer" i don't see much appeal

There was some mode in the original Dead Rising where your health was always going down, all items never replenished, and you basically had to scrounge for food across the mall while dodging zombies. I remember because I tried it for about ten minutes and quit out of boredom.

Azisien 07-26-2011 11:13 PM

Dead Rising multiplayer? I see all the appeal! Fuck yeah!

I never liked L4D. I liked Dead Rising but was occasionally annoyed by time limits. If it is a bit like Dead Rising but with less brutal/nonexistant time limits then I'm game.

This link is just for you, Hawk.

All in all, Im slightly disappointed that what originally looked like it was going to be a really realistic grim survival horror game (kind of like the first few levels of play in Fallout 3 or New Vegas) is instead a cooperative 4-player RPG game almost more like Borderlands. Don't get me wrong, I liked borderlands, its just that I'm not sure if this game is going to be what I hoped it would be.
