Final Fantasy VI: Stand Guard

This is a revision of Final Fantasy III US v1.1, made using LordJ’s excellent FF3usME, and many patches found on this site and elsewhere. It took two and a half months to finish, and there are three patches: one for Easy, one for the original game’s difficulty, and one for Hard. It was my intention to bring the presentation of the game in line with later games in the series, and I re-wrote a bit of the dialog for color.

Short List of Changes:

You may now dash with the cancel button
The font has been changed (Custom font by vivify93)
Spells, items, monsters, etc. have been changed
Gau may now return from any monster formation with less than 6 monsters
Gogo’s command select no longer has a yellow streak in it
Many typos, errors, etc. were corrected
The text has been formatted so that you may name characters whatever you like
The graphics have been changed back to the original game’s uncensored graphics

You monster.

Nah I kid. I'm pokin' at it and I don't know if this breaks forum rules or not. It's technically an IPS patch for Lunar and not a ROM file in and of itself, and contains nothing copywritten, nor emulation.

I'm toying with it now.

Meister 09-01-2011 10:11 AM

What's different about it? Can we have a description, maybe some screenshots? Something to sweeten the deal of downloading completely unknown files?

Nikose Tyris 09-01-2011 10:13 AM

I'm gonna copy and paste the readme file here, if that's cool with everyone?

Many respectable versions of this game exist,
and it is not my intention to downplay their
contributions in any way. Consider this Final
Fantasy VI for Final Fantasy VI nerds.

Installation
------------
I reccommend using SnesTool to apply the patch.
Place the .exe file in the same folder as the
.smc file (FF3 US v1.1) and the .ips file;
the three of them, together in one folder.
Now double-click the .exe file.

First, hit 'A' to Apply header. If it asks
whether you'd like to remove the header,
congrats, you have a headered rom. Say "No."

If it doesn't, it'll ask you two questions.
Say "No" to both of them. Then click 'U' to
Use ips. Use the arrow keys to select the
.ips patch, then the .smc file. When you get
the message "Ips patched ok," you're done.
Now run it in the emulator of your choice.

Changelog
---------
v3.0
- The rest of the monster names have been edited
- A typo in the item description for Magicite has been corrected
- There are now...sigh...three additional patches with "Eidolon" changed back to "Esper" -_-

v2.9
- Banquet guards now return to position to avoid Cid and Ghastra "walking over" them
- Dice are now "regulation"
- Celes blushes correctly when confronted by Setzer
- White cape now has a blocking animation
- Additional edits to script

v2.8
- You may now sprint by holding the cancel button
- Rewritten script
- Font changed to Comic Sans, with some editing
- Changed spell, Esper, item names, monster
names, some attack names
- Evade bug is fixed
- Gogo's yellow streak is fixed
- The title screen is changed to the Japanese
version's title screen
- The intro sequence lacks a translator credit
- Gau starts with only one Rage
- Setzer no longer starts with any headgear
- "GP" was changed to "Gil"
- Gau's behavior on the Veldt, where there
are certain battles that do not have six
monsters, but have a monster in slot 6,
causing him to be unable to return, has been
fixed.
- The graphics have been patched to the
original Final Fantasy VI versions.
- SrBehemoth's item drop behavior has been
corrected.
- "Cafe" has been changed to "Bar"
- "Esper" is now "Eidolon"
- The Rippler bug is now fixed.

Changes I did not make
----------------------
- The Vanish/Death bug is not fixed. Go kill
some Intangirs!
- The Psycho Cyan/Cayene bug is not fixed.
If you really want to go to the trouble...

Changes I was unable to make
----------------------------
- The names that crawl on the screen during the ending were not changed.

Special thanks go out to Lord J and all who
worked on FF3usME with him, Sky Render and RPGone
for their great work over the years, Ted Woolsey
for his original 30-day marathon, Tom Slattery
for renewing my interest, Square for having
made this game in the first place, and my brother
for giving me the idea to do it in the first place.

Remember, you need a copy of the ROM image
for Final Fantasy III US v1.1 and a copy of
SnesTool to apply this patch properly. I
haven't the slightest idea where you might
get them. Look it up, k?

Looks like it's mostly a graphical/text fix with a few added features and difficulty options. In the future, since you seem to be posting this on pretty much every forum ever, I'd suggest linking to the description, rather than directly to the file, 'cause there's no way in hell I'm downloading something directly from a link someone who just joined the forum posted.

Also: "Celise?" Really?

Amake 09-01-2011 11:12 AM

Well, going by that readme you've got a bunch of alterations ranging from convenient to arbitrary to cringeworthy. And going by this thread there's other things left out of the readme. How very random. What is your game, so to speak? What did you wish to achieve here? Anything you want to share about the themes, motivations etc of your work? If you just want to accomplish an unconnected series of things you believe to be improvements on the game, I'll pass; I rather like FF6 as it is.

It's a tribute to Seiken Densetsu 3's "Lise." And I think that's a better phonetic spelling of the name in question. "Sell-eese?" I think? Idk. And you may rename her back to whatever you like, you know.

And if you'd like me to say something about it, I will. I kicked my brother in the teeth when I was 13, and it left a bite mark on my foot. I didn't think much of it till I got violently, horribly sick with an infection and had to be put out of school for two weeks. And I played a lot of Final Fantasy III on the SNES, beating it for the first time.

I liked the font in Sky Render's patch, but not the script. It felt like everyone who spoke in the game was the same person speaking. I just felt that it was a good enough game to deserve a top-notch presentation, and I felt like all three scripts that have been widely distributed had some good lines, so this is rather a mesh of the three: Woolsey, Sky Render and Slattery.

You've got the idea of me pretty much in a nutshell there. I'm only doing this because I can. I have nothing better to do.

I'll post some screenshots, here you are.

Before I try this I have to know, was FFVI even a good game? I say this because Square is hit-and-miss with games, and I know there were at least two games before the double digits that are considered ungodly scourges of the gaming industry.

At least two after the double digits, too, from what I hear!
